Joe: Is your Catalina really only 27'? My 250 is actually longer than that. Chief
If you count your transom hung rudders, right?

We have 250 in our PHRF 2 (non spin) fleet. His hull length is 25.0 feet. His LOA (adding rudders and bow pulpit overhang) is closer to 27. That matches Catalina specs.

Even though my boat may be longer because of the pulpit and the outboard... I don't run around telling people I sail a 29 footer when they ask the size of my boat.

If I owned a boat with a transom hung rudder and the marina tried to tell me that it makes the boat 18" longer... I'd say, "okay, I'll remove it when I'm slipped. Now lower my rent $20/mo please."

Having transited the icw 7 times we found most marinas charge by stated length. Coinjock, nc allong their wall had hash marks and you paid for number of feet you took up, they let you move dingy to side.
mega dock in charleston same.
some boat storage yards doing same.

Boaters always have two answers when asked "what size boat do you have?"

The size goes down whenever a marina asks.
My PY 26 is actually 26'6".....(not counting rudder or pulpit)

When asked at the marina....it is a 26' boat...

When asked on shore by my friends...it's a 27' boat

I always thought LOA stands for Length Over All. That's what our marina charges for.
I've never seen them measure anything.

Ken,

It does, but in the USA the definition is not standardized. In France it is, and that often shows up in boat names. Our First 260 is indeed 26.0 feet long, from the tips of her rudders to the tip of the bow pulpit.

Therefore the French also use another common measurement to them, Longueur de Coque (Hull length), which in the case of the 260 is 24.5 feet, or the very common French size boat of 7.5 meters.

I LIKE the notion that my boat is smaller than the name suggests. Its more fun when you beat a longer and should be faster boat. We routinely stomp on a Merit 25. They used to suggest that it was because we were longer. Not true.

I've always been charged for marina slips on the basis of how long and wide the slip is, not my boat. Marinas rent space and it's finite. If I put a 20-ft boat in 30-ft slip I can't expect to pay for 20-ft. Also, some charge by where the slip is in the marina in relationship to the amenities offered. To me, these are just the facts of boat owning life....

As an aside, what does piss me off is when someone tries to stick a 35-ft boat in a 30-ft slip and has 5 feet of boat hanging out in the fairway -- forcing other boat owners to dodge his boat and complain about it.

Which could be the fault of the marina??? for allowing this, not necessarily the boat owner.

I've read this topic and thought about for the past coupla days.

What the heck difference does it make? Unless you're comparing local, neighboring, close-by marinas for price, in which case you'll get Price X and Price Y `and Price Z anyway.

It is what it is.

Yeah, if a boat sticks out into the fairway in Long Beach, even a little bit, it gets RED TAGGED; the owner has a few days to correct the problem. Otherwise, there is risk of losing the slip permit.

To your other point, there's a lot of variation in what is offered at the various marinas--particularly for the live aboards; i.e., the facilities ashore. Some have modern/new docks housing slips with two fingers (individual slip), "club houses", good laundry facilities, nice showers, workout rooms, tennis courts, ice-vending machines, filtered water dispensers, their own pump-out stations, ample parking [for guests], good security, free Wi-fi, & friendly full-time staff, etc. Others either don't or have minimal versions, e.g., double-wide slips on deteriorating wooden docks, poor security, mediocre laundries, old, grungy showers, no "club house", etc. Naturally, one could expect variable pricing strategies. Considering the few numbers of boaters compared to the population at large and the value of waterfront access, we're very lucky to have nice, well-maintanined marinas on beautiful water fronts at all. It's nice to see them being rebuilt in various places instead of being torn out and replaced by mooring fields. Go to Australia (Port Jackson area) or even Newport Bay, CA, and that's what you'll see. Very few dock marinas; vast mooring fields to keep your boat at!

I hit such a boat. Probably a 30-foot slip, but the boat fit within the confines of the slip. His bow pulput did not- by 2, maybe 3 feet. At the helm and perpendicular to the slips, I could not see the pulpit, nor did crew on my foredeck. We shortened his pulpit a bit, then of course, he got mad at me.

At marina the big boat is at its simple. The boat HAS to fit totally in its slip (no ass in the fairway), and the bow-pulpit/prod/sprit/etc cannot hang over the dock. You pay for the size of your slip (not boat), but often you will get a break if a smaller size you could have used was not available and the marina is not at 100% capacity.

Qualitative proof that threefootites is a communicable disease carried by sailboat owners and transmittable to marinas by $. (this may be a sub virus of the Feb 14 1859 outbreak of Norweagen icefisherman plague which has continued to reemerge in western Oregon for years) : )

Our club charges per foot based on LOA. LOA would include an outboard in its raised position if that's how the owner wants to store his boat. Our marina is tightly packed and this method maintains clear alley ways with no anchors, raised outboards, etc., to navigate around.
