I have a Hunter 216 on a boatlift on a river off the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Is it ok to leave it on the lift for the winter, or should I take it out on its trailer and store it in my backyard? Thanks for your advice.

Imagine a severe winter Nor'easter blowing and the 'lift' is bound in ice or ice flows, the boat has to be moved NOW and the electric service to work the 'lift' will be out for several days.
Backyard is always 'safer' and allows you to 'boat work' conveniently in the late fall, mild winter days and earlier in the spring. ;-)

I'm with RichH on suggesting to keep your boat close at hand over-winter. I've also got a 216, and keep it in the local fairgrounds barn to avoid straining the trailer with snow, and my back with cleanup. I'd also be concerned with the strain placed on the boat, depending on the support from your lift, considering winter weather may be harsher than summer, particularly right off the Atlantic. Better check your zoning prior to moving to your backyard as some locations have restrictions on just parking anything on your grass for extended periods.
I put my boat mostly in my neighbors back yard. Just the bow and trailer tong are in mine. (I'm on a corner lot.)
The house beside mine is a student rental. When I saw the new guys move in I went over to introduce myself. I told them I store my boat in there back yard. A case of beer fixed the deal. Oh, I gave them a garbage calendar too.
I would rather my boat be safe on the trailer than at mother natures whim on a lift over the ice.

We have a lot of racers who own sailboats that are kept on lifts in this neck of the woods. It keeps the hull clean and the boat dry. But,the owners always pull their boats and drag the lift up on the beach or lawn. I suspect you should too.
It's much easier to place the boat on your trailer in good weather than in a time of extreme weather. it allows you to cover it if you wish.
