:)Hello everyone. Happy New Year! I've been on Amazon, Craigslist, & Ebay but I've decided to ask this lovely community. I'm pretty sure I'm going to purchase this 79 Hunter 33' as my first project boat. I wanted to know is there anywhere to find used boat stands? I'm currently in NW Florida.

Are you keeping the boat at home, or in a boatyard? Usually a boatyard will have jackstands available to rent or buy. Good luck with your purchase!

On the other hand... are you sure you would want to buy a jackstand that a boatyard would be willing to part with?

Also, a great point. I will make sure to check the condition of the stands thoroughly. But, it's looking like it might be a good idea to invest in new ones to be able to have them on hand because I will need them throughout my life with my vessel. No?

You could build a cradle... Or construct/buy a lift. If you want to look into a boat lift, the search term is "Gantry Crane". Do a google image search for gantry crane and look through choices... if you are set on jack stands here is a boat stand on Amazon

Here is another place that is a better price

Try searching boat stand instead of jack stand.

I kept my eye on Craigslist and eBay when I was looking for stands. What I found is they are usually listed during haul out season. I started looking in early summer and none were listed until late august. I understand in Florida a lot of boats get hauled out during hurricane season and not in winter, so that might be the time to look.

Nothing wrong with used stands, just look them over for weak metal and welds. I paid $375 for four regular stands and a V stand for the bow (two different sources) that needed new wood pads. At the time new stands would have cost about $650. Of course a year after I bought them a non boating friend gave me 6 stands that were left at his shop....

Definitely check out Brownell Boat stands, as mentioned by rgranger. They are of tubular construction, and much superior to the angle iron stands you see some places. As also mentioned in this thread, chains between the stands are necessary, and the Brownell stands have the crossbar with a notch for chains. Brownell is based in Marion, MA, and their stands have been the standard here in New England since ever!

As long as they are in decent condition. They are only there to keep the boat upright, all of the weight should be on the keel unless it is a swing keel

If you don't have chain for them, you can use shrink wrap string

:yikes: Really? Our boatyard has a gravel base, and the jackstands sit on plywood. Over the course of the winter, the jackstands settle, and the chains become taut. The chains are there to keep a jack stand from popping away from the side of the boat. I can't imagine any string performing that function.
