Two ideas

Check with Boat US, and see if they will sell you the local insurance for your needs there, then a one-time trip insurance for the move to Florida, and then local insurance for Charlotte Harbor area. (State Farm might have a similar deal). Or, if you are going to do a lot of cruising, check with Blue Water Insurance and see what they can do. I dunno what they do on the East Coast but out here on the left coast they handle of lot of Californina/Mexico cruisers. S. s/v/ Good News

but ask to speak to an underwriter and get past the customer service folks that answer. The underwriters will discuss cruising areas and the cost of each. They will prorate between the areas and can give you a rider for the trip n/s. Very helpful when you get to them, the CRS's don't always understand the broader issues.

Boat US won't evan talk to

me about insurance for my 1968 Islander. They will provide hull and liability insurance for newer boats but when they start getting some grey hair Boat US is like a fickle lover.

Is it a company or agent

you are asking about? With some exceptions, most underwriters are national and can write insurance in and for U.S. waters. Unless you actually find someone who's opinion you can trust and who has also moved as you plan, it's probably more prudent for you to talk with several underwriters (i.e., not BoatUS) to compare coverages and rates as no single agent will know both areas - the underwriters will. BoatUS is not an underwriter Don

Claims?

Check with good folks who have had legitimate claims with the great boat us... Progresive, Haggerty, Allstate, and many, many more are out there, but since Katrina ALL boating carriers are gun-shy and not too willing to take many chances. Meaning, more surveys, higher rates, and less coverage, especially for older vessels. This 'Katrina effect' has trickled down all over N America. Good Luck

Catalina 320 Buffalo, NY
Check with Allstate

When I was covered by BoatUS my rate increased when I went under the GWB on my way South from Buffalo, NY. Rate went from about $600 to about $1100. When I cross the Florida border it goes up to about $1800. I went to Allstate and got the same coverage for about $600. There was no increase as I went South. I insisted on a letter from the company explaining that they understood that while my home port was Buffalo I would be cruising in Florida. They did require a survey on my boat a 1994 Catalina 320.

Florida insurance

Nick: Prepare for a shock on FL insurance rates. Many of my friends have moved their boats to GA to reduce their costs Because of the past hurricane seasons (2006 aside) insurance costs in Fl are very high I suggest you insure you home, car and boat with same company to get a reasonable rate John

Car and homeowners...

provider can be lots of help in Florida. All my stuff is with Allstate and I have VERY reasonable rates for an agreeded upon hull value ($70,000) that I had a $2500 claim on after owning the boat 2 weeks. It covered a prop, strut and shaft with just $500 deductable. Transition from NY to FL may be a problem, but you already own your place in FL right? Talk to your homeowners policy holder.

Insurance Review

Practical Sailor did a review of boat insurance this past yr. Boat US came out very favorably and that has been my experience.
