I remember the day well...

Sailingseadragon: As a matter of fact, one your pictures shows what was left of "B" dock at Herrington Harbour. My boat, a Catalina 27 that I owned for 7 weeks, is just visible in the upper right of that picture and presumably just prior to it being hauled -- and eventually totalled. Another photo shows damage to "Whistler," a Pearson 28-2 that sits next to my previous boat, a C&C. I owned three boats in the year 2003. Thanks, I think, for posting these again. Ah, the memories. What a mess. Ma Nature always reminds us of just who is in charge....

Seeing the carnage of what happened in those photos makes me thankful my boat wasn't there. Over the last week, I've seen other photos of how much damage pilings do when the water goes down. A boat survives the pounding and storm surge, but when it goes down the boat gets speared. This will sound really, really stupid to some of you old salts, but is there a reason floating docks don't seem to be used in coastal areas? That's all I've grown up with here in Oklahoma. With the exception of the concrete docks/piers at Lake Heffner in OKC, I don't recall ever seeing any fixed docks here or over in Arkansas or Missouri. I was thinking with tides it would make more sense and you wouldn't have to worry near as much about how your dock lines are rigged. As I said some of you will think me a real idiot, so please type slowly so I will understand )

Alan; Will your umbrella Boat policy addition to your homeowner's policy cover you for protection against a tower who submits a salvage claim for 20% of your boat's agreed value when you experience a hard grounding which requires two of his tow boats, and/or air bags, to get you off?

Self insurance

I personally feel that if you can't afford to absorb the cost of the boat, you can't afford this hobby. So my only interest is liability. But then, I am a believer in personal responsibility. Of course, I feel the same way about vehicles too.
