I know, but the homeowners policy deos not cover theft or storm damage. Only coverage is for damage I do to others property, boat, dock etc.. Think I will do the insurance for a year and see how it goes.

Don't forget that Boat US requires that you hire a professional surveyor for any boat that they insure, prior to even approving their coverage. So you may pay $500 for a surveyor's report, & if they don't like the results they can refuse to insure you. I've heard that they also demand a lot or nearly all repairs suggested in a surveyor's report. While that may be wise, I like to decide how & when I'll spend my money. When you ad all this up, its really not cheaper, its more expensive. I shop around for insurance. Bundling with your house & car is not always cheaper either. I had State Farm for years, & found that I saved a ton by breaking up my policies to whomever was the cheapest with the best coverage for the money. Long story short: Allstate was cheapest for my C 30. I believe its about $250 -300 for agreed 25 k. coverage. They didn't ask anything except whether it was a diesel engine, and did I have a boaters education course. I'm a Boat US member for towing, but they're kinda snooty as far as whom they'll insure.
FALSE, all BoatUS wanted from me were photos of the boat and trailer and where it was going to be used. I paid just $93 last year for a Hunter 23 and trailer with agreed value of $5500.

Could it be that my experience level got me a decent rate?

And try to get coverage including vermin, rat or mice, damage. I had a policy that covered this, went with a lesser priced policy, didn't read the fine print, and just now wrote a check for $1160.00 to replace a bunch of mouse chewed wire insulation that my new policy didn't cover. Mice got about every wire last winter while it was in storage. Lucky no upholstery tho. My fault, I didn't put out moth balls or dryer sheets. Boat was covered over otherwise and stored inside a building. Lessons learned. I'm paying $144/annual with $500 deductible covering about $19,000 in boat, motor and trailer.

Of course $93 is a decent rate! I'll share my new quote later today on our newly acquired O'day 26'.

I'm guessing that coastal waters coverage would add a significant amount to my "inland waters" price.

I have mine under progressive. I have my autos with them and they've been so easy to deal with so far, including when I had a claim from hail damage to the car. They sent a guy out to look at the car and I was able to use whatever body shop I wanted.

Mine has liability, of course, but is also insured against weather (I get tornadoes and storms with winds up to 80 mph every year), against the uninsured, and if I were to break something big.
Mine's an '04 H260 and I've got it covered for 25K and pay about 30 bucks a month. I'm pretty much a newbie sailor since document wise, it's my first boat. I could pay less if I increased my deductibles. The trailer is included.

No surveyors or anything. You get a choice on whether you want to insure it for an "agreed upon" price (basically you set the price as long as it isn't ridiculous) or fair market value. If you go with fair market value, someone has to come look at it. I went with the agreed upon price.

I had a quote from BoatUS. They were a little less expensive but just not as easy to deal with. I can make changes on my policy through progressive whenever I want. I can print out documents when I need to and all without making a phone call and waiting for snail mail. I had actually gotten the boat in possession and the next day forecasts were for some severe storms and tornadoes. I wanted it insured that day which BoatUS couldn't help me with.

I haven't made a boating claim with them yet, but like I said earlier, they were really easy to deal with in the auto department when I made a claim. I had a top notch body shop repair the car and wasn't out a single dime for it. They had their estimate, the body shop told them what it will cost and the two of them worked it out, no big deal.
