I am haveing trouble finding a insurance company that will insure a boat with hurricane coverage along the Gulfcoast of Fl. Does anybody have a company that they prefer. This will be my first saltwater boat so that might be the problem.

Thanks Rick

Progressive here in Katrina-land.. Look at Safeco as well. I had them until they decided to not insure over 26 feet .. No problems with either.. I have not had any claims with Progressive. I had one lightning hit claim with Safeco about 12 years ago.

State Farm here on north coast. But they had no problem with me going to Florida Gulf coast for three years.

Both Progressive and BoatUS will cover you. You'll probably find Progressive to be the less expensive choice, but BoatUS has some nice benefits.

I just finished researching this for a possible relocation to FL. A) very expensive with BOAT/US at the top of the list; B) deductibles are going to be higher - 2% of agreed value as opposed to 1% out of FL - 5% OR HIGHER deductible for a named storm. C) Usually reguired to sumbit a "Hurricane Plan" that needs to be verified by the marina.
I received a tremendous agreed value quote - 75 % lower then the next highest quote - from Charter Lakes Marine Insurance in MD. (main office in Michigan) Contact April at: 410-827-7750 april@charterlakes.com

what progressive says, and what they do WILL be two different things..those who have never had to deal with them on claims are lucky...plus there is Peter Lewis, the Chairman's political leanings which leave some going elsewhere on that alone.

I have had nothing but bad experience with them on boats and on motorcycles. They are really out of their league with boats over 20'...

YMMV

READ the policy, no matter who you go with, as that is what will prevail when there is a claim.

Thanks all. I tryed Boatus and they wanted a hurricane plan that was hard to live with.
Progressive would not put huriricane coverage on the boat but would cover everything else.Sea Safe also would not do hurricane coverage. I will try Charter lakes and see what they say.In 40 years of boating I have never turned in a claim so that can't be the problem.

Thanks again
Rick

Have you talked to your car insurer? My 1986 Newport 28 has full comprehensive coverage, liability, towing medical, including hurricanes thru my car and home insurer, Florida Farm Bureau. They were great on a lightning strike claim, though I think the coastal coverage is limited to 15 miles max off the coast of Florida. I pay $220.00 yr and the boat lives in a slip. A Hunter 22 might be a little less.

I checked with my auto insurance and they do not do boats. The boat I want to insure is a 37 footer and that is over the limits for some companies.I just called Charter lakes and they are going to call back.

Thanks Everyone

I tried the local power squadron but they would not cover a boat over $100,000 for hurricane coverage, they would cover everything under the $100,000.

BoatUS = agreed upon value.
others = replacement value (check before you sign)

That may be the difference in price. I assume that BoatUS had taken some very large losses like Allstate, so that may be why their rates are also higher.

Many companies will add a boat to a home owners policy for very little as long as the boat is 25'11" or less. 26' or longer is thought of as a larger risk and a cut off point. Insurance is something I will be purchasing for the first time for a 30 foot sailboat and I read this thread with much interest.

I will dig up a email from an agent talking the kinds of risk we should be purchasing insurance to cover, and post it in this thread. The email was sent out to slip holders after a boat was destroyed in a fire at the docks.
