Hi all,

Has anyone ever fixed an adjustable boat hook that won’t hold an intermediate length?

a. I have found the Davis hooks to be most useful (very light, durable, most usable hook).

b. Yes, the lock will wear over time. But normally the problem is salt buildup inside. Try a light acid (CLR or similar) wash while fully extended, and then work it back and forth, then let it rest, then rinse. If I was smart this would be part of the spring cleaning list!

^^ This.

On my F-24 I need a super-long one for docking, because my slip is way oversize (a lot of beam for the length) and don't need a short one. I don't use it for heavy pushing, more for snagging lines off the dock.

But on my cruising cat I kept two fixed poles, one across the front of the cabin, and the other in a rod holder on the stern rail. Also much handier than having to carry them around the narrow side decks.

I have…and as Thinwater stated, clean it.
I have one boat hook that does that every season. I am old school, though.
I unscrew the two pieces, wipe down the plastic and inside the tube with Pure White Vinegar. (89 Cents/guart)
Put it back together and like magic it holds again.

Try it, its nature’s miracle cleaner. It removes the film of grease and leaves behind a clean surface.
You can even pour some down the tube, block both ends, shake vigorously and remove. That cleans the entire tube.
I know it sounds like TV commercial but it works…..And if you act now we’ll include our super absorbent drying towel.
Try it.

Plus tax, of course. A telescoping boat hook from West is a few dollars less. I think I'd be more comfortable with that but I don't really get the roll away.

I have a little different experience re: two poles

In SF I had a collapsible because 1) I could fit it in my boat locker and extend it to 2) use it to pick up dock lines; which is pretty much all I used it for.

In BC I learned that collapsible poles do just that: they collapse!!! when you push on them. So, I have retired my collapsible and got a handy dandy straight solid long pole which I can use to PUSH on those pesky bull rails, as well as pick up dock lines.

My experience is that is all depends on how you use your boat. Gee, who knew? :):):)

And, in a nutshell, your post nails the utility of the gold plated roll up boat hook I mentioned above. Super stowable (even better than a collapsible), and solid when rolled out so it doesn't collapse when it would be inconvenient! Not convinced, but I do see the advantages of it.

I fixed the boat hook with a shoulder bolt, (AKA many names for the bolt).

I now have a 12 foot boat hook for $2.00.
