Boat Heat

I have a '92 H28 that I sail in Maine. I would like to extend the sailing season on both ends by adding some sort to heat to my boat. A friend of mine installed an Espar diesel fired forced hot air system (dry heat) on his boat and it is great. I am considering installing an Airtronic D2 unit in mine but they are a fairly expensive. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge on these units (especially in a H28) or a better alternative? Thanks.

Hi Steve, we had a forced air Wallas 1500...

on our H28. Wall mounted, 5,000 BTU, great little heater for extending the boating season. Ours was mounted on the bulkhead above the cooler and the one gallon kerosene tank was installed in the aft cabin locker. The unit is compact, simple to operate, very quiet and power and fuel efficient. You can get more information from Scan Marine in Seattle, the North American distributor. Terry

I second the Wallas, I have a 30D and love it.

Beautfully made units that you don't even want to take out of the box. Craftmanship at its best. abe

Hi Abe, we installed a 40D on our current boat...

and just love it. The model 1500, a unit that came with our first boat, sold me on the product. Easy to operate, simple to install and it keeps the boat toasty warm with very low amps and fuel consumption. Terry

Picture anyone?

Good looking units! Does anyone have a picture of their Wallas heater installation? I am interested in how the unit was vented out of the boat, air supply and power wires were run. Thanks.

Hi Steve, the Wallas 1500 on our H28 was vented...

directly above the furnace through a coach roof fitting. This fitting is double walled so that it vents exhaust and brings in combustion air through the same assembly. It also had a feature that allowed you to close the stack to prevent sea water intrusion during rough seas. As I recall the DC power wires were terminated on the main power bus in the engine compartment, which is what Wallas recommends. As I mentioned in my previous post the one gallon fuel tank sits in the bottom of the hanging locker in the aft cabin. The fuel feed lines come up through the inside of the locker and poke through the bulkhead where the furnace is installed. Sorry, no pics.
