Panama Canal Costs

I think the Panama Canal Costs are much higher then 25 cents per foot. I read an article recently that even for a small boat the fees were $750 - $1000. Small boats pay an extra fee if they cannot maintain 8 knots. Tom

James, Tom brings up a good point

My H34 was charged over $300 in '92. I've read since we gave the Canal back and the Chinese took over running it, the fees have been raised to $800 minimum. A thought!!! Business opportunity alert!! Maybe you can start hauling boats with a truck and hydraulic trailer. It's a 50 mile trip. You could do two a day. But then again, those bureaucratic Panamanians probably won't let you compete with their 'gold mine'.

I looked up the canal website, because I

thought it was quite expensive now. There are 2 places on this page for costs, 1 is the toll based on tonnage. The other is labeled "Tariffs" and it was my impession this is where they really ding small boats. Vessel inspections, tow charges (I think everything must be towed now). Anyway let us know how you make out, I've dreamed of getting to the East coast this way and dismissed as prohibitvely expensive. On the transit reservation form is a line that states "1/1/04 Minimum booking fee for any vessel shall be --- $1,800.00" Maybe that's just to hold a place and they refund excess but I find once someone has your money they don't like to give any back. They even state on the website that they are moving from "break-even" to making some bucks. For a Communist country the chinese government seems to really understand how to benefit from Capitalism in the rest of the world.

Truck to west coast

James, I shipped my Catalina 30 from Solomons on the Chesapeake to Blaine, WA right on the Canadain Border (25 miles from Vancouver)in the fall of 2000 for US $ 4000 plus about 700 to recommisiojn in Blaine and 300 to load in Solomons. I was nopt available at either end so paid for some stuff I would normally do myself. Estimates I recieve were to go to Point Roberts and ranged from 4000 to 8000. Crossing the border into Canada added up to $1500 depending on the company. In any event, my trucker was stopped at the Canadian border on a truck safety issue so the boat was dropped at Semiahmoo marina in Blaine instead on the US side. I would suggest if you do it that you deliver the boat to Blaine and sail to your home port on the island to save money. Its a great sail and easily done in a day. Customs clearance is also easier. Canal.... it's not that expensive.

Follow the link to an article pertaing to yachts and the canal, rather than big ships. Here is an excrpt: "As of July 2003, transit fees for boat up to 50 feet in overall length are a fixed transit fee of $550 and a buffer of $900 to cover additional costs incurred during the canal crossing. If no additional fees are incurred, the buffer will be refunded"
