I have a gas outboard but reading about this diesel v. gasoline debate, and reading some of the downsides of deisel (junk growing in the tank), I was wondering. Do people put fuel additives into the tank to keep these problems down? Jet-A is pretty much just further refined Deisel, you can even run deisel engines on jet fuel, and can get some of the same growth issues. To preven this growth as well as other issues we put additives in the fuel with the most popular being Prist. Just wondering if people do the same with deisel engines, if not it might be a good idea.

Err, we do! At least the smart ones do! We also have primary and secondary fuel filters with water separators. The problems is we use so little fuel that the water for fuel ratio can get out of hand. The best thing to do is go on a least one trip a year or polish the fuel. Polishing the fuel means running through large filters and water separators until it is clean.

I put additives into my gas tank with my A4

and they are: fuel stabilizer, Marvel Mystery Oil and lead substitute (according to Don Moyer's instructions). I think that the gasoline tank still gets crap built up at the bottom but the fuel additives and judicious running of the engine can clean a lot of this out without significant mishap. Diesel fuel does allow bacteria to grow in it and there are additives to help remedy this problem. Changing the fuel filters on a diesel seems like it is more important than with a gas engine but they both need this done to keep them happy. I like the fact that diesels are meant to be run longer under load (and work better this way) than gas engines but I like my gas engine as it is pretty easy to debug and get it turning over in a pinch. I do not believe that there is a debate about diesel versus gas engines. When I do my next trans-Atlantic crossing I would be happy to have a diesel engine powering my boat and would think long and hard about doing this with a gas engine (there are no filling stations on St. Peter and Paul's rocks. Know your engine and know it well.
