No boat Chrysler 26 Hudson FL
I have a 26' sailboat I want to sell by myself. I have put an add in the local paper with no results. The boat is in the water behind a residential home here in Florida. I have a trailer and have toyed with the idea putting it on the trailer and put it on some lot exposing it to heavy traffic 0n US 19. Is it better in the water or on a trailer to sell?

Tough question

Don, Some people ,most people want to see it in the water and sail it. Others want to know what the bottom looks like. Others are going to want to sail it then see the bottom. If you put it on the trailer and have alot of exposure, be ready to launch it to let them sail it. I think that you might have to try both if you don't sell it in the water. Next point if you are not sailing it and paying extra to keep it in the water, put it on the trailer. hope that helped r.w.landau

slow moving

Hi Don, I am also selling a 25 foot boat in the Tampa Bay area and haven't had much luck, it's a slow boat selling year. I can tell you that I have tried newspaper ads in other area's within 50 or so miles and that brought in fresh phone calls so you might try that, also, I purchased a larger used boat a few months ago and what was important to me was that all the equipment worked, the teak looked good, the windows were clear, no signs of water leaks and the seller had everything that didn't go with the boat off it. Boats that were full of junk was a real turn off to me. I hope this helps, good luck to both of us, Jack

Eposure

is what you need. U.S. 19 would be a good option. Have you tried advertising in the Mariner, it reaches a lot of people. If your pricing is too high, it will turn off a lot of potential buyers. If dock space is available, that is a good incentive. Sold our Chrysler 26 5 year ago. It was in a marina with a sign on it. Lots of traffic.

Try this

I'm a newspaper publisher with some experience in this. Find the biggest weekly in the market that also has boat ads. Try that. Then find the dominant daily in terms of boat ads and try that second. Meanwhile put it up on website such as this that have wide appeal. Finally, build a nice flier with photo and put it up in chandleries and boat places nearest the boat. If no calls within 10 days, stop. Come back in a month and try the cycle again.

I found my boat less than 40 miles from home using this website. See link below. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

SailboatOwners.com

Although not free, advertising your boat here on SailboatOwners.com has proven to be very effective at reaching your target audience. Yachworld.com is primarily for boats sold through dealers/brokers. Best of luck! Trevor

Just bought one

I just got a ODay 25 and I wish it came with a trailer so if you have a trailer do emphasize the fact. Great selling point since sailboats trailers are hard to come by.

Take photos

If you do intend to launch it, take several photos of the bottom, from every angle you can, so you have a recent record of its condition. Also, have a couple of disinterested parties, say marina people, look it over while it is out of the water. Then a prospective buyer could talk to them about what shape it's in below the waterline, and be relatively confident in the info he gets. If you post any ads on bulletin boards, color photos grab attention best.
