I paid a little over $600 for personal property tax in the state of California for my 1994 Hunter Vision 36. This is an annual tax.

Unfortunately I DO NOT get to vote for the folks that impose these type of taxes. I get nothing from this assessment other than the privledge to keep my boat in a private harbor on private property.

Is this what they mean when they say that freedom isn't free? <g>

Can you imagine how my friend with a Nordic 42 tug (value around $500k must feel)?

Have not heard of this. Do you have details?

I would love to vote the out. However We live in delaware. There are no good places to dock on our coast. That really is taxation without representation.

we are fortunate in Louisiana to have a very large number of boats so our fees are relatively small.. For a 34' boat like mine, $67 for three years.. for a 40' boat, $79 for three years. There are no sales taxes on boats 10 years old or older.. There is no property tax. .. AND, we can sail pretty much year 'round.. What a deal.

EDIT: for new boats and used less than ten years old, there is an abusive 9.5% state sales and local tax..

So, I guess it is my GOOD FORTUNE to have paid so little for GOOD TRADE, and have the price documented, as well as my vessel, with the USCG.

It depends on where you keep the boat--many states require you to register the boat, whether or not it is documented with the USCG. For example, even if you are just visiting Florida they require you to have a state registration from somewhere, even if you are documented and from out of state.

If you buy a used boat, even privately, if you decide to register it in your name the federal government will send you a tax bill for the sales tax. The good thing is they don't know how much you actually paid and ask for a copy of the receipt. I guess the good thing is once paid we don't have to pay a yearly or by-yearly fee YET. I'm sure they will figure this out soon.

course chp, your telling the whole world is not going to help your situation. the cat is out of the bag now and there is no putting it back in. I suggest you try and obscure your name on SBO as the Macgregor 26s owner in hamilton who joined Sep 2010 and has only made 105 post....... The internet is a bad place to advertise your failure to follow the rules. Kinda like that gal that posted to Facebook that the guys she just interviewed for a job with where real jerks. They did a casual google search and posted on her site that she would not be getting the job.

We call that poor OPSEC (operational security) in the military

Everything in the quoted comment is utter, ignorant, nonsense. Just saying..

Now, let's get to the facts. This is proposed law HB1307. Don't like it, talk to your rep and ask them to oppose, or amend. More facts: If it passes, it will cost you $37.50 USD/year to register your Macgregor 26 in Maryland. My 41? An intolerable $62.50 USD/yr. The Horror.

We Are a CG documented vessel in Connecticut and have to pay an annual CT registration fee that costs me $330 a year for our H44. No CT registration numbers on the bow but I do need to affix the CT decal. Boat is exempt from personal property tax. We have seen Ct Environmental police walking the docks checking vessels for the decal or issuing fines

actually according to your site....your 41 would be $250 every two years, or $125 annually, unless you read the article differently, then you pay.....$250 yearly, two years in advance?? or arrears?? ...such a poorly worded document, it is really tough to decipher the fees on yearly basis - but then this is MD....

As my boat resides in ny more than NJ, I would have to reg it there. How would they assess a value for a 1977 38' boat. When I recieved the boat it was a mess,no engine, ect very poor shape....Red

Normal way to assess is to simply find out the average resale value (BUC, NADA, etc.) , fudge in an extra 20-30% and simply send you the bill. With the government its always 'guilty' until you spend a fortune proving your 'innocence' by a long sequence of expensive and time consuming endless 'appeals' and never ending "red-tape" etc.

Hey Gunni. If you notice I'm in Canada not the U.S. I don't know which is better. A lump sum or yearly fees. I'm not looking forward to the tax that I will pay when the time comes to move up in boat size.

Thanks Warren

Vote them out... I live in Virginia and my USCG documented boat is in Maryland - with Maryland registration. Which means, I have no vote.

I've had the pleasure of living in a lot of different states, and they do have differences in the particulars but they all tax you, just in different ways. Depending on your situation you can find your own taxes lower or higher in one state or another, but overall I have found in aggregate they are closer than it might at first appear. Boat registration fees are one thing to look at, sales and use taxes is another, and property taxes are a third way boats can cost you. Just be careful when you move your storage location of the boat from one state to another to not fall afoul of some fee or tax you were not aware of. Besides, there is a lot more to a state than how much you pay in taxes--it is very easy to note that for example higher taxed states often have higher paying jobs, better schools, less crime, etc. Highest costs of living, taxes, etc. tend to be in the Northeast, which also tends to have the lowest crime, best schools, and highest wages, on average.

No, KD3PC, my 41 foot boat would cost me $125 USD every two years in Maryland. Hence the $62.50/yr.

And for my Virginia friends I can assure you that your Commonwealth is considerably more expensive, and less boater-friendly because municipalities charge you a hefty yearly property tax that Maryland does not. And then the Commonwealth lays on a boat registration fee! Even with this legislation, it is cheaper to keep your boat in Maryland.
