Jim: I'm not complaining -- yet. I've owned boats for over 30 years, all registered in Maryland, and I've paid the same flat $24 fee every two years. That's the price of very good lunch around here. All the states are hurting, so this kind of thing is more or less expected....

not in NJ- I'm a USCG documented vessel and I gotta get that sticker on my transom each year or I'm gonna get boarded. I don't need to put the NJ number on my bow- if that's any consolation.

I believe that in NY you have to register if you are documented And the state wants its sales tax too! That will make that $52 look like a day at the beach

By NJSP or USCG or NY officials? USCG and NY may not care but NJSP may take issue with it since it still has to be registered in NJ.

Every state is hurting for revenue and you're going to see fees raised all over the place, because they can they say they aren't raising taxes. However, if you think this is bad, pity the poor boaters in places like South Carolina where they pay a whopping property tax on their boats every year. When I lived there I paid over $400 per year on a boat valued at $25,000.

Wow. I sure hope the governments here don't see this. Its only been recently the feds started to send a sales tax bill when you buy a used boat. Soon they'll find a way to tax you if you have sex.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
In Virginia we get a personal property tax every year. I have known a few people that owned boats for 10 years and ended up paying more in personal property tax than they paid for the boat over that time period. It is ridiculous.

By the way, never assume that any official, any boater, or any Internet expert is giving you the correct answer to any tax question without doing your own research into what the actual wording of the real laws are. Even published boater's guides distributed by the states sometimes get things wrong, or don't point out the many exceptions and oddities that sometimes exist with regard to these fees. For example, how many people know that Florida has an antique boat registration system for boats that are more than 30 years old and meet some other criteria that can result in your paying one-fifth as much as some other boat your same length, or that if you register with a county they can tack on fees of $40 or $50 on top of what you would otherwise pay? Every state has tons of wrinkles like that you have to watch out for.

Hey Jim, my documentation lists my homeport, as NY,NY, I only visit Nj for about 4-5 months most years, sometimes less. Does this make a difference as to nj registration??? Red

^^^ Many of the reasons we are looking to move out of state. On top of the taxes, we in Berlin, Md, with out non-working(broke down years ago), town owned electric company, pay the highest rates in Maryland.

The key parts the statute governing registration in NJ are "a documented vessel is based within this State if its owner owns, maintains, leases or rents space in this State for its storage, mooring or servicing on other than a transient basis."

"The owner of a documented vessel of 500 gross tons or less based in this State shall file an application for the registration of such vessel with the division on forms approved by it. The application shall be signed by the owner and shall be accompanied by the fee prescribed herein for the vessel. Upon receipt of the application in the approved form and the prescribed fee, the division shall enter the same upon the records of its office and issue to the applicant a pocket-size, laminated or otherwise water resistant certificate of registration which shall state the name and address of the owner, a description of the vessel, and its use.

The certificate of registration shall be available at all times for inspection on the vessel for which issued whenever the vessel is in operation."

So it all really depends on where it is primarily kept. If your marina is in NJ then it should be registered in NJ, even if it is documented. As previously stated, documented vessels registered in NJ do not have to display the State numbers but they still want their $52 (more or less) and in return, they give you the nifty State registration sticker which must be displayed.

Finally, a tax we would all be proud to pay!

Does the state charge personal property taxes on top of your registration fees?

In California the registration fee is only $5-$10 but they charge personal property taxes on top of this equal to 1% of the vessels value.

In NJ there is no personal property tax, only sales tax at the time of purchase. On MV and boat titles you used to be able to write "gift" or have the seller leave the "selling price" space blank but the red flag goes up now and they will investigate any perceived discrepancies (e.g. If I reported my 2000 C310 purchased for $200) and they can charge tax at "appraised value" if you can't justify the price.

I wouldn't be surprised if they started, though!

I'm ok with the $52 annual registration for my boat considering what others pay.
