We recently sold our Hunter and bought a new boat which is being delivered from Durbin SA. The manufacture arranged for the delivery as part of the purchase. My question relates to the Captian and crew. Is it normal to TIP for making a sucessful delvery for us. Thanks Bil sv Makai Formerly sv Feng Shui

No???

I'd sat tipping is always good form. Tipping and giving a good letter of reference can be important for a Captain and his crew. I'd also ask them to go over the boat with you and to let you know of any problems they found. Ask if they tightened the rigging as they sailed over as a lot of new boats need the rigging retuned during or after the first voyage. Good luck with the new boat!

Tipping- Thanks!

Part of the delivery includes a couple days with the delivery captain reviewing and walking through the boat. Thanks we are excited! Appreciate the input on the tip

He's professional, not a dock hand

There's a "rule" in the service industries (hairdressers, etc): tip employees, but never the owner. Your delivery captain will hire his own crew of at least one...crew are never paid well--sometimes nothing. So my suggestion is: when you pay the captain, ask him what he thinks would be an appropriate amount to tip his crew. He will appreciate both your treating him as the professional he is and your regard for the crew. If you do anything for the captain at all, buy him a nice gift--something he can actually use, not some useless nautical trinket to add to the rest of his collection of useless nautical junk. My $.02 worth...

Peggie ... On the other hand ...

when we do do deliveries ... and they go well ... even when the owner forgets to tell us things like the head doesn't work ... or the fuel filters were just changed and "never a problem". or the second leg GPS Chip got dipped in salt water and doesn't work "all the time" ... or the anchor winch switch is burned out with 100 feet of chain on the bottom. There is never an offense with a cash "bonus" ... what we don't need is another shirt with Captain Vic on it. Vic

Tips

That still leaves me in a little quandry. The Captain was hired by the builder to delvier the boat from Durbin SA. Since the delivery on Sunday we have treated him and his crew to several excellent dinners (they were looking for fresh food) plus have run the up to Balt from Annapolis to clear into the country. Captain Ron (yes that is is name) will be staying with us through the week to celan, prepeare the boat for hand over and then a couple of days of Bay sailing to help us learn the boat. Any suggestions would be helpful Bil sv Makai

I would...

assuming you're happy with the service why not? You probably wouldn't tip an airline pilot or the captain of a cruise ship but it sounds like you've had a good experience with the guy, he did a good job, and maybe he could show you some things about your new boat. I mean he did sail it over from South Africa after all... Most of the licensed skippers I know don't expect tips as part of their pay but if one is given they certainly won't be offended. Congrats on your new boat!

The question now becomes ... what did the builder

pay him to do and what is he doing "for fun". You have a quandry there for sure ... maybe a phone call to the builder to clear up this problem would be a good start and you can find out just what the builder has paid him to do. Once you have the boat, I would think that anything the captain does beyond that should be recognized. Not many builders handhold very well once they have your money ... so this looks like a special case ... it's not a catamaran is it? They require a little more handholding for the first time cat owner and a cat delivery captain probably would feel that way as well. Vic

New Boat

Yes it is a catamaran built by Voyage yachts(life includes comprimises, wife had input on the new boat). They have been excllent to work with from the beginning. Everything from keeping informed from the build through the delivery. The delivery includes a few days of on the water with the delivery Captain. Thanks for the input it has really helpedd! Bil

Cats are great ... did Annnapolis to Daytona

on a Lagoon 380 last Oct. and then Canaveral to Grand Bahamas this winter. Wifie, who never really liked a monohull, was very up on the grand bahamas trip ... even through the 33hr. overnighter. Picked the 380 up at the boat show and did an overnight through the Chesapeake to Norfolk. I still don't know what the Chesapeake looks like south of Annapolis during daylight. Only thing I would like to see on that boat is a bow thruster that would really help on docking stern in especially with the windage. If you ever come up to Newport ... look me up. Vic

We are excited. The wife didn't mind to much the life on the mono hull but she wanted more space and less healing. So we compromised. With the bay the shallow draft will be a great benefit. I don't have a thruster but the two enginess for docking has got to be easier than one! We will keep that in mind. We are hoping to sail North next spring.
