Oday 22 Orlando
I am restoring an old 1974 O'Day 22'.It has been poorly brush painted long ago and I am sanding down to repaint. The original gelcoat appears to be a light beige.Does anyone know what color this is or what color now on the market that will be as close to original as possible.I would like to bring the boat back as close to possible to original. Thanks to all and smooth sailing.

1974 standard color seems to have been white on most 22s that I've seen. 1973 boats were either red or a yellow/brown/beige color and there may be some 1974 boats in that color too. I've pictured it below.....does that help? Check the various paint manufacturers web sites for color chips, WEST Marine might also have that on their web site. Still, I'm not sure an EXACT match can be found from any standard paint color, custom matching may be necessary. However, as long as you paint the entire topside surface of the hull, it really doesn't matter if the color is EXACTLY the original shade.

I've attached a few pic of 1973 and 1974 22s as well as one of the aft quarter of a 1973 JAVELIN. quality of the pic and level of lighting will affect the color as will different computor monitors.

We used to have an O'Day 34 that had a colored gel coat, that I believe was referred to a "bisque." It was more of an off white then beige. Keep in mind that boats get scraped up from minor dock mishaps over the years. That's why most sailors prefer white, cause its easier to match & repair down the road. I've seen some really expensive dark blue hull Awlgrip paintjobs that cost 10 grand or more get scraped up, & I'm sure their owners must have been pissed. Keep it simple & neutral on a small boat cause its cheaper to paint & maintain.

My 86 O'Day 222 came with a color called "Tidal Sands" which is an off white color. Rudy at D&R Marine used to have gelcoat in stock years ago. According to what Rudy told me, Gelcoat has a shelf life but it can last longer if it's refrigerated. It can also last indefinitely if you keep it in a freezer.

That's the original color of my boat. The PO re-painted it dark blue - I put on red bottom paint and a white boot stripe - I like that much better than than that original yuck yellow. No offense! There is something to be said for restoring a classic old boat like the ODay 22 to original condition. (I'd probably like the color better if it had a nice shine on it!)

Hey Nelson - what's you hull number - I'm wondering how far apart our two boars are.

Mine is: XDY J 0825 08 73 - so best I can figure mine was the 825th one built in 08/73
