Saw this on Yahoo this morning. Apparently just happened. Boat capsized, two dead, four injured. Said near Virginia Beach, on the Chessy. No other info. Checked a couple of weather bouys, and looks like winds were in the 15 knot range, and water temps in the low 40's. A tragic loss. Anyone from this area have more information.

Boat was registerred in Arizona.

99% of the boaters up here know that even in the middle of summer on a 95 degree day, going in the water could be deadly. Every once in a while you see the 1% out there in their bass boats with coolers full of bud. Luckily Darwin takes care of them.

Sounds Like a Costly err in Judgement

6 POB with SCA in area. I bet the boat was already overloaded when it left the dock.

Going into 46˚ water is basically very dangerous under most conditions, never mind when it is SCA conditions.

Yep, it went over first thing this morning

Next to the Lesner Bridge. We had pretty stiff winds, with 5 foot waves, 6 fools on board an 18 footer. Damn shame, but I have a hard time feeling sorry for someone stupid enough to go out with Small Craft Warnings, cold temps, high waves in an overloaded boat. It is hard for me to understand that there are people that really have no common sense. We start this year with a phased in requirement to make the operation in Virginia waters illegal without a safe boating course.

Here's a C&P From one of the local newspapers, The Virginia Pilot

VIRGINIA BEACH - Two people are confirmed dead after a small boat capsized in an inlet in Virginia Beach with a half-dozen passengers this morning.

Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard and the Virginia Beach Police Department teamed up in an attempt to rescue the passengers, with live footage broadcast on national cable networks.

Virginia Beach police spokesman Adam Bernstein said two people have died after the accident.

The Coast Guard received a mayday call came in around 9 a.m. from an 18-foot aluminum boat with six passengers in the Lynnhaven Inlet near Lesner Bridge. The boat was taking on water and on the verge of capsizing.

The Coast Guard sent a helicopter and a rescue boat and received assistance from local police and fire departments and from the Virginia Pilots Association, a private organization. The boat was found north of Bay Bridge.

Billy Councelman, vice president of the Virginia Pilots Association, says he had boats out on the bay boarding ships when the call came.

"Actually, I was on shore during this whole operation, but the Maryland pilots and the Virginian pilots had two boats in bound from ships at Cape Henry when the mayday was heard. By the time my boat arrived, shortly after that the Coast Guard arrived with a Coast Guard diver, who picked up two of the survivors and airlifted them in a helicopter. Two of them, we found two more in the water that were lifted above the boat. The Virginia Beach Police and Virginia Beach Rescue Squad arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and picked up two others -- survivors," Councelman says.

It's unclear how the boat capsized. Councelman says the small fishing boat just started taking on water and then sank. Virginia Marine Police will investigate the cause of the incident.

If I'm lucky to make it to 89 you will find me in a rocking chair not in a skiff in the mouth of the cheasapeake.

From the photos I've seen the boat didn't look like it sank. It had capsized, but was still afloat with the bottom of the boat out of the water. Also, aren't most smaller boats like that required to have positive floatation??

I haven't confirmed, but I heard small craft advisory, overloaded boat, and Bay Bridge area. There can be a really strong current around the bridges at the mouth of the bay. Couple that with big waves, winds, and an overloaded boat, and you have a recipe for disaster.

I fish out there all the time, especially in december and everytime I am out I say I gotta get a mustang suit... hopefully by next fall I can spare the extra cash and just get one. In the meantime, my fishing buddy has one and my plan is to knock him out and take his when needed :eek::D:snooty:

It occurred at the mouth of the LESNER bridge, not the Bay bridge tunnel bridges..... less than a half mile from my house !
6 men from Arazona, in a small boat, none wearing PFDs, on a cold Winter day with SCA and water temp in mid 40's. ... and TWO EXCELLENT seafood markets less than a 1/4 mile from where they went in ! !
"IT" pretty much summed it up.

This story reminds me of a story told to me many years ago when I lived in South Carolina. A man said that he and a friend had gone fishing on the Santee-Cooper lakes in late January. A really snotty day, mixed rain and snow and plenty of wind. He said when they finally called it a day and headed for home they passed a golf course with players out and his friend remarked that those crazy golfers will play in any kind of weather.

I sure hope that I can

still be active enough at 89 to get out and go sailing, or fishing. I never ever want to retire to a rocking chair. One thing you can say, at least he went out doing something he loved, which to me is much better than spending weeks or months in a sick bed, waiting to die.

I have seen a lot of men take to the rocking chair and in just a few years they couldn't get out of it. I hope that I am healthy enough when I am old to die doing something I love. Alzhiemers sucks big time and wearing a diaper and depending on someone to feed me has no positive values for me. Before I get that bad I will walk outside on a cold night and hide.

Ross, 'N Easy: maybe you've seen Deanna Bogart's band perform? They have a song, "I may get older, but I'm not getting old". My life often seems TOO busy, but I'm not gonna sit in a rocker (except my boat) until it's my only option.

I'm sure there are others that can find some benefit to "wearing a diaper" and being spoon-fed, but that's for another forum....

But I'm with you: Finish off a bottle of good rum then sit on the deck on a nice night like last night.
