While crusing, several owners have "calling" cards for their boats. The idea is to exchange them as you meet new friends, and possibly to stay in touch with certain of them. I have not been able to find any guidelines for what these cards should contain. Does anyone have some info to share?

Design one Yourself

They can contain whatever you want to put on them. As Secretary of the Maine Hunter Sailing Association, I create them for our new members. They contain our logo, member's and/or S.O.'s Name, Boat name, hailing port. contact phone numbers, email addr, boat picture. Get creative. http://www.mainehuntersailing.com

calling cards

Boat name, home port, address, ham call sign, boat make and model. Yours and spouse's names. Pet's name(s). E-mail address. Nice picture of boat preferrable. I make them on the computer. When I get one from another boat I write the date and place I received it on the back. Some people keep them in a Rolodex so when they meet you again they can hail you and "remember" your name. (Getting harder every year) :)

Great idea, almost like a QSL card...

some of the older ham operators might remember QSL cards, you exchanged them with other hams you talked to on the radio. You could even get awards for having collected one from every state, every continent, etc. Never thought of doing one for my boat, but it sounds like a great idea! Now, where did I put that digital camera?

Carol, you'll find this a very common practice...

...in any sailing venue populated by cruising boats. We carry a plastic 'biz card file' to hold the cards; in fact, we have several ('Boat Biz Cards; Boat Cards; Homeport Biz/Dr. Cards) and these keep us organized. Some folks like to have boat cards printed up at a local printer but there's a very inexpensive way to do them. Buy a packet of Avery Business Card blanks (you can pick the color); they will work in your standard printer. Play with font and size and jpeg files and such and create your own biz card by following the instructions on the back of the Avery packet, which gives all the set-up directions for Word and a couple of other WP programs. Making the layout once will multiply it enough times to fill up a sheet of biz cards, which later break apart into individual cards. The reason I like this is that you can create a card as your personal data changes...or when you want to 'feature' some unique info for a giving period or circumstance, and then just print up what you need. You design your own

You can design your own boat cards with whatever you wish to print on them. We list our names, the boat name, the yacht club, our home address, and telephone numbers and e-mail address. Some folks don't what to publish so much information By the way you can essentially get free cards from a place on the web called VistaPrint. You pay postage. I've made up several different types using their services.
