I've been offered a chance to buy a 1972 30' Pearson. From what the owner could tell me, this is what is included:Five fore sails in reasonable condition. I'm not sure what reasonable means. I'm guessing tired ,but serviceable. One main unknown age, a good working Atomic four inboard .Draft was around 5 feet. She was asking $9000. This boat has spent it's entire life in freshwater. She will kept on Lake Michigan if I decide to buy it.I like the fact that the mainsail controls are mounted in the rear of cockpit.I prefer a smoother ride over a speedier one. I've looked at a few other Pearsons on the web and the price seems reasonable. Have any of you sailed one before? Is there perhps another brand comparable? Thanks Timm

Pearson

has a good rep Timm, but you cannot get good solid advice (other than general) from a forum, get a survey or do some research. You could send some pics, but at the end of the day, you need to make the decision your self and get a pro to help you with this.

Pearson 30

The Pearson 30 is a fast racer/cruiser that will compete very nicely with current boats. She was built very strongly if not overbuilt. The layout is traditional and quite roomy although I think the 28 felt bigger. I never heard anyone complain because they owned a Pearson. Bill Shaw designed wonderful boats that have lasted decades. As with any boat, condition is largely based on how she was maintained and always get a survey. Check out the link below. http://pearsoninfo.net/index.cfm Tim R.

my Pearson 30 is my third boat. LOVE her!! She is a 75 model, 5 foot draft and has a poured keel, (no more kel bolts to worry about) I got her a little over a year ago for $15,000. She came with two mains, two spinakers, and six other assorted head sails. The previous owner, Dave Steffe from Ocean Springs had raced her from New Orleans to Destin FL and many races in between with very successful results. She is not as roomy as some other production boats but this last year I did two week long trips to FL. in her, on with a friend and one with my son, and was not cramped. The only shortcoming i can see is that the "ice box" is virtually usless in the summer. After half a day motoring in the ICW to get to Pirates Cove most all the ice was gone. Other than that, she's a great boat for me! Frank

Thirty six years old, too old a boat for me...has to be lots of fixing up. If you are serious get a serious detailed survey.

Pearson 30

Ive owned two Pearson`s over the past 25 years. A 10M and my current boat a 26W Pearson`s are solid good sailing over built boats. There are tons of them for sale. They built about 2000 of the P30 and the hulls dont wear out. This is a great boat for short money. There is one for sale been sitting in a yard down the street from me for 2 years now. The owner cant sell it. Why? The Atomic 4 This boat is clean in good condition with good sails. No one will touch it with a 10 foot pole because of the 30 year old Atomic 4. These inboards have a zenith updraft carburetor on them as stock. The engine sits over the bilge. You splash one drop of water in that carburetor the engine wont start. You let the boat sit in the water for a week get a little moisture in the carburetor it wont start. Especially a 30 year old one. Unless your a tip top ignition man avoid it. Thats why they dont make them any more. Your two other alternatives are put a 10hp outboard on the transon. It will work but not ideal on asthetics or for long cruises. Option 2 Put a new diesel in it. But thats gonna cost you more than the boat. What ever you do get a competent surveyor first. Good luck

The engine in my boat is a 41 year old A4

It requires some tlc but keeps on ticking (knock wood). If you are not willing to spend some time getting to know the engine and maintaining it then others comments about the A4 engine should be heeded. That said, we got our '67 Tartan 27' for $4k about 5 years ago. Bargain them down on the Pearson 30'. I certainly would not pass up putting in a low bid on that boat if on the market, say $6k. The link for everything you need to know about the A4: http://www.moyermarine.com/ Your mileage may vary.

A4

I had one on my Irwin 32 and I kept that boat for 14 years, selling it 3 years ago. I never experienced andy of the problems bffatcat mentions. Parts a readily available and many of these engines are still in service. They are easy to work on and are fine engines. The reason they don't manufacture them anymore is that diesels are a better choice for a sailboat. Here in Olcott there is a 70s vintage 30 in the white sail fleet that no one can touch. I had the opportunity to day sail her and liked the boat real well.
