Boat broken into

I just got back from the boat after a call from the yard manager telling me that my companionway was open and he thought I was broken into. On the 30 minute drive out there I imagined all kinds of damage and theft, and called insurance while en route to ask them the procedure for filing a claim. When I got there, I was surprised to see that while the boat was in fact broken into, lock cut and cabinet contents strewn all over the place, I could only be sure of one thing missing - a recent pack of flares! I'm not sure if a foul weather jacket is missing. I have to search around home to see if I took it off already. They tossed aside a relatively new inflatable PFD, left the year-old VHF, and anything else of value (not much, thankfully, as I took most off the boat when it was put on the hard in November). Yard manager thinks it was likely just kids looking for money, booze, or anything else to have a good time with, hence only taking the flares. He said sometimes they take fire extinguishers, just to shoot them off. So, this leaves me wondering - anyone have any great ideas for boat security in a relatively unsecure yard? What, aside from taking everything off (I've now brought home the VHF, PFD, flashlights and winch handles), can you do to discourage theft, or is it just something that is going to happen at some point?

Alarms that shut down and reset in two minutes.

A small solar panel should be able to support such a system. Are there people close enough to respond if an alarm does go off? Maybe a large bottle of cheap vodka and a bottle of fruit juice will keep them there long enough to get drunk and fall of the boat.

Alarm is an interesting idea Ross.

The manager/owner lives adjacent to the yard, and would hear such an alarm if it went off and he was home. I'd just be worried that the reset would not work and other neighbors would get pissed! Vodka is a great idea! As long as they'd fall off, or fall asleep, before doing any damage.

You could test the reset function periodically.

I would set it up as a dedicated system that didn't rely on the house battery.

Find another boatyard....

..would be my first choice to increase security.

Apparently the Yard Manager doesn't manage

to keep thieves from having access to the yard, just calls the owners & says those darn fire extinguisher stealing kids have broke into your boat this time?

You can install an alarm

Here is a link to a company that sells marine alarm systems. Something that makes a lot of noise is a discouragement. Dan http://www.boatalarm.com/howtobuyanalarm.html

Ted, does your community have a ZERO

crime rate? No? Then your police department isn't doing it's job! We must get real, thieves can be pretty darn clever.

Ross, I think thieves have a type of cunning

common to crows, racoons and other varmints but are not really clever as evidenced by their actions. Not many dry storage yards here but one thing they do have is a least a little security like a big fence with razor wire and limited access. I just have a low tolerance for vandals, this would be just the place for a "Trunk Monkey" if they were still available.

The equipment being sold in Dan's link is not

marinized. Probably far more sophisticated than necessary. A motion detector mounted inside the cabin wired to a deck horn/ microphone/ speaker system would alert the people that would respond, broadcast the speech and activities of the intruders and unnerve all but the most dedicated thieves.

Solar light that gets trigger with movement....

have the light inside the boat with a sensor for movement. Someone gets on board light goes on...thief might think someone inside the boat turned the light on. You avoid alarms going off in the middle of the night pissing off the neighbours. abe

If the alarm shuts off after a minute or two

it will have done its job. If it resets after shut off them the boat is still protected, there is some indication that a responce is being made and if the thief decides to check it out he triggers the alarm again.
