Great photo Rick! I just watched the film with Brando, makes me want to sail to Tahiti.

I find that picture quite disturbing. What's with the Happy Holidays? Why can't we just say Merry Christmas?
Well Rick, I'm sure you realize this, and actually you are probably just funnin with the pic...but to point out the obvious, cause I get some flak round here for my happy holidays; it is because they wanted to be more inclusive and spread good cheer to all, including christ'smass folks; verses excluding those people who do not believe in/celebrate christ'smass.

Having writ that...I have no problem with being told "happy christmass", for real..., but think it should be reciprocated and "they" should have no problem with my "happy solstice!" or happy holidays!

I think we need some Vega$ Babe pics to warm our little black hearts thru all these blizzards & storms & such.
Would a collective whining from the board help our cause ?

Nope.. same ol' Empty Pocket!

...found a great little propane heater that keeps the cockpit nice & toasty for Steph, even when it is freezing like tonight... 36 degrees and right now we are sitting in the cockpit off Cumberland Island with Whisper (the cat) enjoying some wine & jazz. Christmas lights are on and the water is calm...

What a life!

Steph,

Do you know the name of the heater. It looks nice. We sail on lake Ontario and it is cool in the spring. Looks like that heater could be the ticket. Did you have to modify the Dri-Deck where it is sitting. We have the same material as you do in the cockpit.
Thanks
Dale

If you look closely you will see that Brian and Steph have installed an enclosure for the cockpit to keep the warm in and the cold out. I am guessing it either drapes over the bimini and dodger or is otherwise attached to the bimini and dodger. Up here in the frozen north many boats have a permanent enclosure with zip out sides, screens, etc. to make the seasons more enjoyable and they work on biting insects as well. The heaters you can get for such enclosed small spaces ought to have an oxygen level sensor which shuts them off when the PPM of oxygen falls below a certain level. The enclosures make for a nice addition to any boat and will pay for themselves in a short time.
Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year to one and all.

Heater

An alternative that would avoid the poisonous gas risk is to install a diesel forced air furnace. I installed ours a few years ago to extend the sailing season for year around cruising comfort. Marvels at producing heat so little fuel and DC power consumption. A bit more expensive than a propane heater.

Good suggestions Mike & Terry

with an enclosure and a diesel heater Steph could model bikinis year round in any weather. Lookin' forward to it.

Heater questions.....

Ok, one of the heaters we mentioned is a coleman catalytic heater "Sport Cat" that can be found at camping stores and runs on the small disposable propane bottles.

Correct, we have extended our bimini and dodger with additional canvas screens/glass/panels that snap and zipper securely. Although expensive, it has been a great investment, creating a whole additional "room" on our very compact 25.5 boat. The enclosure is not 100% sealed such that oxygen levels are a concern. There is enough "draft" between snaps to keep air properly vented for the heater.

The byproducts of properly burning propane are WATER and CO2 (that's the same stuff WE breath out). You will notice increased condensation in the boat if you are using lots of propane, but the gas is not "poisonous". The carbon monoxide will not be a concern as long as you have a proper burn and proper ventilation.

My enclosure with screens, plastic roll-up windows and all panels removable installed with framing was 6K and worth every penny. It's true it is like an extra room and on chilly, rainy, buggy days it gets you out of the salon and out in the "open". Raise the cockpit table, get a coffee/wine/whiskey (whatever) a good book and it is phat city. I had to move my traveler from the bridge deck to the cabin top so I could have the boat fully enclosed and still sail. All in all a good investment. SWMBO is very happy with it and you know what they say; "happy wife, happy life".

Looks a little chilly but winter sailing is still sailing:) Thanks for the pics. Surely there's a business conference that MUST be attended down in the BVIs. Hope you both have a great new year. We'll be in St Augustine on Sunday looking at a cruising cat(the fiberglass kind). Give a call if you'd like to get some lunch.
All our best to you and yours,
Mike n Kelli

Cumberland Island looks like a great place to visit. I have driven past it before but never went out to the island. Did you anchor out and dinghy ashore to hike?? It looks like there are good places to anchor. Thanks for the photos. we are stuck on the hard right now. Too cold to finish the bottom painting ,once that is done we are on our way.

Heated Bikini Project

Brian - after looking at the Christmas Eve pictures I was thinking of a great idea for a Mechanical Engineer: inventing a heated bikini.

But, after looking at the picture "at 38 degrees".....

...at 38 degrees!
..... I'm thinking, to heck with that idea!

Please disregard any thought of that!
