I added the cockpit scupper to my C22. I also purchased a 2" "Fernco" rubber cap for the top of the rubber hose that the swing keel cable goes thru. For those of you who don't know what a Fernco is, it's a rubber plumbing fitting, which goes over steel, plastic, or cast iron pipe, then is secured by means of a stainless steel clam which is tightened with a screwdriver of socket wrench.

I drilled a 1/4" hole thru the center of the cap, then I used a utility knife to cut from the center of the cap and thru one side of the Fernco so that I could slip the Fernco over the cable, then position it onto the top of the rubber hose. I then secured it in place with the clamp.

The main benefit of installing the Fernco is that I no longer get water backing up the tube when using reverse on my outboard motor. I discovered this by accident while raising the keel to back up in a shoal area. I could see the water coming in from the top of the tube.

I have been pleasantly surprised but the capabilities and handling of my Boomaroo 22 ( Catalina 22). What I have found is that if I keep the largest possible headsail up and reef the main early. You can balance the boat really nicely and minimise the weather helm to almost nothing. Added effect is the boat sits quite flat. About 2 weeks ago I had the boat out in 24-27 knot wind. Steady and not gusty but increasing and then dropping back in a gradual way. The wind had been strong for a couple of days creating a short steep breaking swell of 1.5 to 2 meters. The Boomaroo road the swell with easy, moving along at 5 knots with the storm headsail and double reefed main. Hardly any heal. In hindsight it would have been possible to fly the number 1 headsail for a little more power. At no stage did the boat feel out of control. I was impressed. These boats are good solid craft. I guess what I'm trying to say is get a good feel for reducing sail and how the boat responds to various sail configurations and when in doubt, fly less canvas.
Here's a little piece of footage from the day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqO8frKMa2A&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Please excuse the fluttery jib. There's no leach line on it and the backwinding is when I'm sailing around breaking waves. This was the first time out in these conditions. I'll definitely do it again.

yah good video

Gotta ask what are you using on the deck?

Is that like a type of wood planking? (fake wood I'm sure but looks good)
Or is that just a paint and I cant see good in the video?

Anyway looks like ya havin fun. We dont get winds like that very often here I'm jellious. Most of the time I'm happy with 10-15mph winds which are often enough to keep me occupied but only time we have winds like that are during a thunderstorm or in the early spring.

Thanks.
No, no planking fake or otherwise. The brown is the nonskid gelcoat part of the deck. I guess it's the chocolate brown that makes the chocolate in "Hot Chocolate".

Kind of like the idea of mostly getting 10-15 knoters. Probably my favourite conditions are about 10-15 knots. You can have lots of sail up, boat speed is good. It's totally relaxing. My wife likes it as she can sun bake while I sail.

Interesting issue. The keel or the direction should have no bearing on the water coming in from that source. You do know that when the turning ball is in place, that this and the cable should block most of the water movement coming in through that source from something like a wave action. My turning ball is about at water level when it's normally loaded and then theres about 8" of hose above that. I've never had water come in even with 7 adults in our boat on a flat lake.

I went out into the delta again this weekend. It was my first solo sail! I too got a sudden gust of wind that felt as if it were about to blow me over. The first thing that came to mind was the advice to let off on the mainsheet (which I immediately did). The boat quickly righted itself and rounded up into the wind. I don't know how far over I was or how far it would have gone but it went past my comfort zone! However, with the sage advice in this string I survived. All in all it was a fun sail with some really fast legs, some mistakes and goofs and a couple of high pucker factor moments.
THANKS AGAIN PAPHMAN!!!
