Boarding (transom) Ladder

Hi List, I'm shopping for a transom ladder, and would like some opinions on what style works well on a C22. Being the impatient sort, I'm not happy with the 4-5 week back order wait for the Catalina Direct ladder. Does anyone have any experience with the Garelick "Sport" type ladders? Those are the style with the single vertical member running down the center of the treads. They're rated to support 400lbs., but my concern is more for the transom of the C22 on the starboard side. Is the transom cored with plywood in that area, as it is on the port side for the outboard mount, and will the transom support a single mounting point ladder such as this? I've also seen a Garelick 2 step folding ladder, with the more conventional 2 verticals, but it's only 24" extended, and I'd prefer something at least 36". All comments appreciated. Chuck K. I have had that same concern about the Garelick

sport ladder. I am concerned about putting that kind of load on a small space rather than distributing it evenly over two spaces, despite the fact that it is through-bolted. Maybe if it had a thick steel backing plate on the inside of the transom that was twice the size of the ladder bracket??? When I added a through-hull (starboard transom) for my auto-bilge, it did not appear to be cored with plywood. It looked more like a dense foam or balsa (it was soft), layered on either side with fiberglass. Let me know what you find out. Matt Munson C-22 "Kickitupanotch" #10622

Use a two rail ladder

Chuck: A few years ago I purchased a garelick transom mount sailboat ladder that has worked out very well. This ladder is in two sections upper part mounts to the transom and the lower part hinges near the bottom of the top section. Most of the time when I am sailing I only need to fold up the bottom section and secure it to the top section(this way it only sticks up a couple of inches above the transom), but you could swing the whole ladder straight up and secure it to the back stay. My 1973 C22 does not have a stern pulpit so this ladder works quite well. It's also easier to get down when the boat is on the trailer since the strap is only about chest high and not over your head like the standart C22 ladder. The ladder I bought can be found in the West Marine and Boat US Catalogues, It only took me three days to get mine from Boat US. As far as the transom goes I through bolted mine using oversized washers and have had no problems at all and I weigh two to three times what my motor weighs. Good Luck! Catalina Direct Ladder

I ordered a ladder from Catalina Direct about two weeks ago. By phone they said it was backordered, but it arrived over here in Wyoming in just a short week. You might try them again. Dick

Transom Ladder

Chuck: The ladder I have is a: Garelick "Stainless Sailboat Folding Transom Ladder" Model # 19241 (4 step). They also make a one piece "Stainless Sailboat Transom Ladder" Model # 19240 (4 Step). I hope these model numbers are right, I got them from an old M
