About 3 years ago, my brother purchased a dinghy tow system for his Catalina 30. See this link http://www.dinghy-tow.com/. It not only makes towing the dinghy easier, it keeps it dry and makes removal of the motor easier. I find it allows a secure means to enter and leave the dinghy. I think for your small dogs, the stability would help you manage moving your dogs to and from. Especially if you have a doggy pfd with a handle to lift your dog. I recommend you check them out. I don't recall the price but seems like it was in the $1000 range.

Boarding ladders

I have two boats a Windjammer 21 and a Embroden 32. The Windjammer 21 name is First Born and she sports a stern extend able s/s stern ladder which when fully extended goes 4' into the water. On My Embroden 32, which is named Teacher's Pet III, I have a fixable s/s ladder which hooks on to two mounts on the side rail of the boat, I have them on port and stbd sides, My dinghy is a 14' nester with a well covered rub rail. I tie the dinghy fore and aft, snugly against the side of the hull, and can locate the seat we step on right at the ladder. This ladder extends down into the water about 3'6" just enough to be able to climb aboard with diving gear on, less fins.
I feel that a boarding ladder must really be a boarding ladder, whether U are climbing out of a dink or coming out of the water. Both mine are stainless steel, one folds the other I tgie off on the stern rail when its not in use. Whenever the boat is at anchor, I always tie off a float alongside the ladder; we have cats and on one or more occasions they have gone overboard, the float has saved their lives. Something to think about with dogs too.
I normally post on the trailersailors board so I do not know how to post pictures here?

Lagoon thought about this when they designed there boats first there are the sugar scoops aft that are very easy to walk down to whatever heigth the dink, small boat,or dock. Second they installed a foot hold about 20" down in the side of the hull at midship right at the shrouds with a gate in the lifelines. I would think that you could have something like that permanatly installed wich would make it practical at dock as well as boarding your dink. Good luck and be careful wich ever way you decide to go. More sailors are lost trying to get from there dink to the boat or visa versa than are lost to bad weather by far!

boarding the dinghy pets

getting in the dinghy is something iI still have to work on, but we have 2 dogs that we lift on and off the boat using a bath towell tied into a lift that goes under their bellies from front to back, like they use with dolphins. They stay in one at a time and don't have to worry about losing them in the water. I am considering a swim platform on the back because the deck is so high off the water. good luck in lake superior, it is beautiful up there. watch for passing freighters.

Freeboard

Our 1991 P42 has very high freeboard. To help the admiral and I with boarding from the dock or dinghy I made a portable boarding step that can be moved around from side to side. It actually makes it easier to board the boat from a dinghy using the step rather than from the transom.

Check out the Boat Info tab above, Hunter Owner Modifications, 42 and the article that I wrote including project pictures will describe this little gem. Easy to make, easy to carry and stow, very strong and low cost.
