Does anyone know where I could find blueprints for an O'Day 27? I want to redo the interior, including bulkheads, shelves, etc.

I'm not sure you'll find blueprints. It's easy to find the layout drawings for boats on Sailboatdata.com. Here is the 27. The tough thing will be finding drawings or photos that match your year. O'Day seemed to tweak their models every year, whether it meant relocating a water tank, or the design of the galley, or something else. Seems there are a lot of variations.

O'Day scantlings

Blueprints are for houses and buildings. Boats have
scantlings and drawings.

In shipbuilding, the scantlings refers to the collective
dimensions of the various parts, particularly the
framing and structural supports. The word is most
often used in the plural to describe how much structural
strength in the form of girders, I-beams, etc. is in a
given section. The scantling length refers to the
structural length of a ship.

There are many O'Day boat designs and drawings
on file at Mystic Seaport Ships Museum Library. Mystic
Seaport used to be a good source of information until
they hired the latest boss who is trying to make it
into a amusement park.

Years ago it was a simple matter to see and examine
ships drawings. Many famous naval architects gave
their works to the library. Understand that was in the
past. Now you have limited access, but still do the
last time I tried.

C. Raymond Hunt and associates did just that. You
will find many of the drawings for O'Day sailboats on
file therein. And, one of the original principal designers
of O'Day sailboats still walks this earth. That is John
H. Deknatel, listed as President of Raymond Hunt and
associates.

I never looked for O'Day 27 information. That is your
challenge. Tell us what you find.

individuals. Finally, high abilities are often
linked with serious stupidity.” Walter B. Pitkin

Be aware the Oday 27 was NOT a Deknatal design. This was the smallest production boat designed by Alan Gurney the designer most noted for his maxiboat ocean racers. Of these probably the best known being Windward Passage. Gurney was well studied by the likes of Bruce Farr among others. The Oday 27 was the boat of choice owned by the president of Oday Jim Gleason. So you have a piece of sailing history there. Re: O'Day scantlings

Thanks for the help. I haven't been to Mystic Seaport in many years. Sad to hear it's being made into a theme park.

Hey!, thanks for the info. "scantlings" my new word for the day. I wonder if I can get my admiral scantling clad in her new bikini.

Jim "Gleason" or Jim "Hunt"?

Jim Hunt (Ray's son) was President of O'DAY for many years, Robbie Pierce was VP and actively raced a 27 and later a 30, both named "American Pie".
Jim Hunt "retired" (some say he was forced out?) just before O'DAY was bought from LEAR Siegler by a group of investors in 1986-7, he and his wife cruised around the world in an O'DAY 40 named "Whale and the Bird".

Funny you mention that sunbird. The article said Gleason. Now when I started my career I worked for Gleason Corp. which no surprise was run by a Jim Gleason. No relation.
