Hey again!!!! I have the itch to paint my H34 while I have it out of the H2O.... I would really like to paint it dark blue, and keep a white deck.... I think that a gold stripe at the water line, and one at the top. Red mahogony bright work, and maroon bottom paint... what do you think????? also, what kinds of paints have you all had success with... 1 or 2 part? awlgrip, interlux or Imron??? I assume Florida and not Penna. where I grew up. The knocks on dark hulls that you hear are 1) hotter interior and 2) minor scratches really show. But they sure are pretty. I think the dark green Tartan 3800 is one of the best looking boats in our marina. Of course that is green gelcoat, not paint. I did one coat of Interlux Toplac on my cabin trunk. Came out looking like a spray job even though I rolled and tipped it. I would opt for two-part but I work alone. You can't do two-part without a good partner.

Hey Folks A professionally done dark blue paint job looks great . .until you scar it . .and if your are like everybody else that is inevitable. I had one of my previous boats painted by the so-called experts. They stripped the boat of all the hardware first, sanded primed, you name it, to the tune of 5 grand for a 31 footer. Two days out of the shop I scaped a piling at a fuel dock . it was down hill from there. Be prepared to devote your free time to touch ups! Unlike the gelcoat finish there is no such thing as a buff out to hide the marks.You can't even get a gelcoat filler or patching material to match; you have to blend your own. It is also more difficult I think to sell a colored hull. People are suspicious that it was painted to hide damage. Then too, you have to find a buyer that likes the color you painted it. As one of the trade publication says about buying a used boat "any color hull is all right, as long as its white." I agree. Fred Miller S/V M Squared

I have one,blue hull, white topside,red bottom. Is it beautiful? Absolutely, I get compliments whenever I take it out. Is it distinctive? Absolutely, there are no other sailboats that look anything like it. Would I do it again? Absolutely,NOT. It is like owning a new car and having to park it at the end of the lot some that you don't get it nicked. I don't take it out as much(I am not a big sailor anyway) because everytime I take it out of the slip the white rubber protectors mark it with the white. If you get a nick on it, it shows like you have a sore thumb. Trust me, there is a reason that most sailboats are white and not blue. Let the other guy have the blude hull and think to yourself, "looks great but I know that you have to be ten times more careful than I do with my white hull that does not show nicks and scratches like your blue hull. I though about it but a little birdie told me "DON'T".

Another option
The other posters are right about what a pain a dark hull is. I took a different route and replaced the blue stripes and canvas with green. The boat looks unique and very attractive. If all you do is change the stripes, you could probably replace the interior cushions for the price of an Awlgrip/Imron paint job.

Do you really think that you can do an quality paint job for $1500 (about the price of a new interior)? I suppose if you are doing it yourself, but it would be a lot more than this for the yard to paint it.

Rick, thanks for the compliment. I LOVE my blue hull on my H34. I did not find it to be any hotter last summer than the white hull I had before. As for scratches, I was just as anal about my white hull as I am about the blue one. No one wants dock rash but it is part of the game. I went for toast sunbrella to offset the blue hull and white topsides - looks great !

I am still trying to consider it... the good thing about it is that I have a friend who paints porsches and BMW's in Orlando, and he says that he wants to help me paint. He also gets great deals on some very fine paints and primers. I plan on keeping a "Touch up kit," but like Travis I am anal about my white hull as well... When I dock my boat, it's really slow, and fender city man!!! Thanks, Jamie Glory Bound.. P.S. Travis.. I would love to see a picture of your boat!

Gel Coat
I am redoing my hull in gel coat. I did some extensive repairs to the gel coat on my former boat and I like the way it goes on and looks. See the forum on gel coating for more info. The advantages is that it can be built up and sanded. I found it easier to apply and more forgiving than paint. The only additional step is spraying a coat of mold release over the gel coat to allow it to harden but that is easy. And, as I said, you can build it up, sand out drips or overspray etc. And it is the same material as the original. The hardest part is matching existing colors but if you do the whole hull that is not a problem.

Wasn't it Alden, the designer, who said a sailboat should be either black or white, and he wasn't too sure about black. There are many arguments for white, visability being but one. When it comes to boats form should follow function, as in most things.
