I am trying to figure out what this blue tube/cylinder is on my Universal 5411 in my 80 Catalina 27. I bought the boat a year ago and am just now trying to unravel the mess of wires in the engine compartment. This blue cynlinder is spliced into the orange line that runs from the alternator to the engine harness (going to the engine control panel). The blue tube also has a line that runs to the engine ground. ???? It has the following writen on its side: Source code 658 658-8847-922 REC 0230002-001 Any ideas on this would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Wild Guess?

Steve, I don't have a schematic in front of me, but I vaguely remember that the orange wire from the alternator is one that should be replaced with the wiring harness upgrade. If the alternator output is going through the orange wire up to the engine panel gauges, then back to the batteries, the blue cylinder might be a noise filter. Often alternators put out radio frequency "noise", and that can be overcome with the use of a filter. Don't know how they work, but your description of a black wire also coming out of the cylinder gave me the clue. By the way, if you have an eight-pronged plug in your wiring coming off the engine, it should be replaced right away. Seaward Products in CA, makers of the engine panel, can give you all the details and parts. You'll drastically improve charging efficiency changing from the plug to a terminal strip, and also eliminating the ammeter in the engine panel.

5411 stuff

Steve, I have the same year C-27 and used to have the 5411 installed. I did not have the blue cylinder on mine. I would assume, as you probably have, this was installed aftermarket. It sounds like some sort of noise filter as previously posted. I have repowered with an M-18 but still utilize the original wiring harnesses. I have yet to have any charging problems as others have mentioned. My alternator charges two battery banks through a battery combiner. I still have my original 5411 which was still running strong. If you have an interest in it, let me know. Regards, Frank Davanzo #4583 "Miss Virginia"
