blue bungee, mailsheet purchase ratios

Where is the blue bungee cord at the centerboard supposed to be fastened? My 170, as it came from the dealer, had one end clipped to the centerboard bail and the other to a shackle on the mast tabernacle. Helps with the uphaul, I suppose, but does nothing to keep the board down, as some posts in the archive have suggested it is designed to do. I'm considering switching to end-boom sheeting, as Mike G. has done (see his post in the archives), to reduce the physical exertion needed to control the main sheet. Would probably use a 3:1 purchase, since end-boom sheeting requires less leverage but a longer mainsheet. Has anyone tried adding a block to the existing 4:1 midboom setup to make it a 5:1? Is this practical? I figure if I switch the two stock fiddle blocks so that the end of the mainsheet is tied to the becket on the upper fiddle block, I can add a large single block below the lower fiddle to make the final 90 degree turn to the cam cleat. Any comments would be appreciated.

I'm not familiar with the 170 setup but if you "add" a block to a 4:1 purchase you will create a 8:1 purchase, not 5:1.

Blue Bungee

I have a 2004 Hunter 170. The bugee is secured to the center board by a bail, when you lower the center board all the way down and pull the bungee streight back, you should be able to secure it to a fastener which is locted on the deck just in front of the base for your outhaul. this will keep your center board down. Its kind of hard on my boat be cause the fastener is so close to the base of the outhual. Glenn

bungee fastening point

Glenn, Thanks for the tip. My 2002 model year 170 came with the blue bungee, and a bail on the centerboard, but no place to fasten the bungee aft of the centerboard trunk. The dealer didn't get it right, and the bungee isn't mentioned in the owner's manual. I'll install a strap eye when the boat comes out of storage this spring, and I'll be sure to leave room between it and the base of the mainsheet blocks.

Have you thought about FOAMING your MAST !

Steve, I foamed the top of my mast after capsizing last October, The 170 TURTLED IMMEDIATELY ! You won't be able to right the boat yourself ! It took a Harbor Rescue boat to right mine and they broke the mast while doing so !......it snapped cleanly in half at the shroud spreader point. Foaming the mast is easy and it prevents the water from RUSHING inside the mast, gives you a little more time to right your boat before it TURTLES. If your interested in FOAMING your mast let me know and I can explaing how to do it, simple job! Glenn (H.D.A.S.C.)
