I am interested in sailing to Block Island from Point Judith Labor Day weekend and I not familiar with these waters. Any RI natives to give some pointers- prevailing winds? tides? distance? special provisioning? docking? launching? Thanks Gary

BI Trip

Gary, I do the Pt Judith BI trip several times each summer. Prevailing wind is soutwest, Tide and current isn't too much of a factor, except into and out of the Harbour's on BI. There are two ports there, Old Harbour, mostly sport fisherman and power cruisers, and New Harbour an excellent sailboat anchorage area, I suggest either Paine's Dock, or BI boat basin. Both have a dinghy dock's for easy access to shore. I can go on and on, so if you have any specific questions, please ask and I will try to answer. Tony B

Great Salt Pond

Gary, There is limited anchoring in the west corner (port as you enter) of the Great Salt Pond. There are many lime green town morings farther in $30. Launch service, bikes to rent, great place to spend a couple days. An easy few hours sail from Pt. Judith. Stan Christy Leigh c320 #656
