I saw an article today about the launching of a new model by one of Maine's top builders. This quote would have seemed absurd to me even last year but now...

"Given current economic conditions, the small M29, at $185,000, is a more affordable day sailer that still can keep people on the water."

It just goes to show that most of a boat's price is age and surface finish. I've got about a third of that in my boat including three seasons of dockage, storage, insurance, new sails, and all the upgrades documented on my web site. With the new companionway and storm covers, she's ready to take me to Scotland when I get tired of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Sure, she's battered and worn looking but she's solid and I don't even notice the water stains around the ports when I'm snug in some remote anchorage.

That's what I call "affordable".

Rodger, I'll bet that you and I and several others here don't look showroom fresh either but that doesn't mean that we are ready for the scrap yard.
