Filters all clean, including any engine-mounted filters? Crud on tank pick
up?

Holy Smokes! Was the boat owner helping lift the boat?
Can't imagine the engine mounts didn't also fail.
I can't get my coupling off the old combi prop shaft, so I'm preparing to
cut the shaft to get it out of the boat.
Either that or remove the engine first and pull that POS out the front.

I have a whole Volvo Penta Combi engine system, from control lever to shaft & prop, transmission, the works. I'd prefer to get it to someone as a complete system; wouldn't you like a spare (ran good, 2011). Let me know ...

Bruce,

Hull #101 - 1967. Diesel engine, installed 2000, very few hours on it. Full battened main, furling jib. Lots of custom woodwork - teak port frames, bow roller, re-inforced bulkhead beam. Has an old Tiller Master that works. Great sailing boat.

Located in Ventura Isle Marina.

Hi Walt and Judy

Thanks for the input as it helps considerably.

I have an electric pump near the diesel tank in the locker which I installed as I fond it difficult to prime the fuel lines only using the lift pump on the Yanmar 2GM. Once primed I can start the engine without the electric fuel pump and run it at about half revs before the engine starts to hunt. The exhaust at this point is clear of smoke. If I then switch on the electric fuel pump the engine runs fin but generates white smoke from the exhaust and the seal on the fuel filter leaks. I guess that the fuel pump is generating too much pressure. What is the make and model of the pump you have fitted and any idea where I can purchase in the UK? Do you have any running issues with the engine when you are using the electric pump?

Regards

David

A slow air leak into the system could also cause the engine to stop. Lyric has an electronic pump in line in addition to the engine pump. We started having problems and I suspected that the diaphragm may have developed a leak. We changed the pump and stopped the problem. It might be worthwhile to check for loose fittings between the injectors and the tank. Maybe a bad gasket on the fuel filter? Good luck! Walt

Maybe a vent issue with the fuel tank?

Hi David, I also fitted an electric fuel pump (low pressure) as
recommended) and had similar problems - the exhaust was very sooty and
black deposits were all over the stern. I ended up fitting a new
mechanical pump and the problem got much worse so I removed the
electric pump and the engine ran much better - no sooty deposits on
the stern and smoother engine. On inspection I found that the old
mechanical pump had a membrane that had deteriorated and the rubber
had "stretched" so I guess its throughput was much reduced.

I assumed the fuel pressure to the injector pump was too high... only
a guess!

ps fitting a new fuel pump was very easy to do and solved all of the
problems.

Pete- I have removed one before. No problem. Did you follow the instructions "Combi Without Tears"? Don't cut. Terrible waste. Let us guide you through it. Trev (V2915)

Hi John

My mechanical fuel lift pump body fractured early this year and I fitted a
new Yanmar unit. With the new pump fitted i am still getting loss of power
above average revs. I think I must have an air leak. Just to check if we
have the same lift height to the lift pump from the tank Is your fuel tank
in the bottom of the port locker?

Thanks for your help

David
