Hi all, hope everyone is enjoying this season. My question this year is a touch of black smoke, and some drops of oil I saw when backing into my slip today. I gave a burst of thrust in reverse and a puff of black smoke came out with some drops of oil in the water. I am in NY Harbor and thought it was already in the water, but on a second burst of throttle it happened again. Is this just carbon or diesel fuel burning or something to watch out for. Engine seems to run fine. Thanks Ed "Bashert" H280

Yanmar 2GMF

Your boat has either th 9 or 18 hp yanmar engine. Isuspect it is the 18 hp. First I would recommend to go to your dealer and ask that question. If they cannot answe it for you, then look for an quthorized Yanmar repair shop which you can find in the yellow pages and call them. If you are still having trouble locating the nearest Yanmar auithoried mechanic, then call Mac Boring at 908-0964-0700 for the nearest dealer to you. Crazy Dave Condon

You didn't mention it but it sounds like your prop is dirty. The buildup on the prop makes it less efficeien and you have to really load the engine to get enough power to move the boat.

Black Smoke Too!!!

I had the exact same experience with the Yanmar on my H 37 last weekend. Smoke and some oil came out exhaust when I really "stepped on it" in reverse". Otherwise, the engine runs fine and there is no smoke under normal operations. I tend to think it is not a serious problem----at least I hope it isn't! Let me know if you find out differently and I will do the same.

Normal To Smoke

Black smoke is normal with any diesel engine under an extreem acceleration condition. Black smoke is unburned diesel fuel hence the oil sheen on the water. You can observe this condition anytime you want by looking at older heavy trucks pulling away from traffic lights. Do not worry about this occuring under those conditions you discribe.
