Here's the bone

The black piece of plastic that covers half of the cabin top and is opened by sliding it under the othe half of the cabin top so you can enter the cabin. When closed it sits on top of the hatch boards.

Oh I thought you were talking about something you would use to slide down a hill after it snowed.lol
BTW.....It's called your companion way hatch. There are some pretty good illustrations you can find on the web. That would help you learn all the proper boating terms. Welcome to the world of boating.

Wood screwed to the back of the slider

If it slides, it's a slider. Thanks There is a piece of wood screwed to the bow end of the plexigrass that is soaked with water. The wood is tapered on both ends. I'm not sure if this is the way it is suspose to be or if it is the result of wear. It appears that when we have a good rain, the water goes over the top. It looks like that might have to be removed and then the cover would slide out the stern end. I would have to replace or reseal the wood again. I don't want to try to take is off unless I'm sure what I'm doing.

For tale tales you can save money by just using old cassette or 8 track tape.

I can't recall exactly, but have you looked at lifting the forward part of the cabin top? On my 23, the "slider" - the dark plexiglass hatch cover - slides under a fiberglass hatch cover that can be lifted at the rear end, hinging at the front end. That should expose the wood stopper piece you describe. You may have to remove the 2 teak pieces that hold the hatch cover (the slider) down to the cabin, but (on mine) the screws on these are exposed and do not require removal of plugs.

I was able to remove my 1985 lexan hatch cover by tilting the fiberglass hatch up and pulling out the lexan portion until it meets the stop then pulling down on the trailing edge to clear the stop. Easy Peasy and I didn't even have to remove the wood bracket. :D
