The black bands at the top of my mast and the end of my boom are gone. The lower band on the mast is partially gone. I can still see faint marks at the masthead and the boom end where they belong. What should I use to replace them?? They look as though they may have just been vinyl tape. Is that the right thing to use? If so, how can I help them to last through a season or 2?

I think they're there because of old racing rules.

Aren't those IOR bands? Help me out here Alan. Does any rule still use them?

Black bands

According to the original owner's manual drawings of the rigging on my Coronado 27, the black band at the top of the mast marked the top of the hoist for the mainsail. The band at the bottom near the gooseneck marked the tack postion and the one on the aft end of the boom marked the clew postion. Fred, you are probably correct in that these bands were to insure that the mainsail was within class rules for racing. Maybe Alan can add to this.

Another reason

I believe the black tape delineates the proper distance for the length of the foot, which is vital when ordering new sails. But I could be mistaken.

I just used black electrical tape

when I re-rigged and re-painted my mast with LPU in 1992, the one at the top of the mast is still there and readable from the deck 13 years later.

Yep, they are the max length for the sail dimensions. Any sail larger(outside) these lines will pull a protest and get you a DSQ. If you're not racing, don't worry about it. The one on the end of the boom can be replaced with(or added to) a length of measure tape so you can reproduce a know outhaul tension(like the ones you use on your adjustable genoa cars)

Old racing rule stuff

I'm also under the impression these were used under old class racing rules so committee boat refs could see at a glance that everyone's rig was within specs. Since my gooseneck is riveted in place there didn't seem a point, so I just removed it all...
