Birthday Sail Tomorrow!!

My H37C is in North Carolina. So for my birthday my significant other chartered a nice H290 for the day. It is just down the road in St. Pete. Weather prevented the scheduled outing and now, three weeks later, tomorrow is the day. But the charter captain had to upgrade us to a Catalina 350! Should I go? On a Catalina!? Just kidding you Cat owners. I am actually looking forward to testing a far coast boat. We'll sail over to Pine Key by Apollo Beach and have lunch. Just an easy day on the water with a completely novice crew. And maybe our friends Lea and Ed Allen will join us from Davis Island on their H37C.

Ed, tomorrow was worth waiting for!

80 degrees, 40% humidity, winds light in the am, to 12 knots in the afternoon.. does it get any better!!? I'm actually at work right now, comtemplating skipping out and hitting the bay- it's perfect. Only thing is the weather channel says breeze is ssw, but the news said we're enjoying a northwest flow, which accounts for the low humidity. Either way, enjoy the day, use sunscreen, and take pictures- the family and friends back up in Ohio will be jealous! ;D cup

Lake breeze on Tampa Bay?

Up on Lake Erie we get the "lake breeze". That's the wind from the north because of the land being warmer than the water. A few miles offshore you hit the doldrums and a little farther out the actual forecasted wind. I suppose you must get a sea breeze around here. Would that be the reason for SSW today? Because on the bike this morning it was definitely northerly. So my sail back from Pine Key could be dead into it?

Happy Birthday and Great Present

Dear Ed: Happy Birthday. Hope you aren't so taken with the Catalina 350 that soon we will see your 37C for sale on Yachtworld! Will you post your impression of the Catalina sailing experience vs. our venerable Cherubini design? My marina neighbor boat is a quite new Catalina 350. I'm frequently looking at it's running rigging for ideas to try out on my 1980 Hunter 36C. But for the most part, it's all much to new a design to adopt without serious modification to my boat. (Although I recently came across and bought for not much $'s a good condition used mainsail from a previous model Catalina 36 that has full mast-to-leach battens. The Catalina sail has foot and luff dimensions that are only few inches less than my existing mainsail so I'm expecting a good exchange. I've not put it on yet, but am curious if the full battens will make a performance difference other than not getting caught as easily in the lazy-jacks when raising the sail. I do have some Hunter pride however. Wouldn't do to sail a Hunter impostering as a Catalina. So I've already removed the Catalina insignias from the sail.) regards, rardi
