At Colonial Beach Yacht Center there are birds trying to roost on the top of the mast of several boats in front of the office. You see them standing on the mast head fly. What can I do...legally???

go sailing

If they're roosting/nesting at the top of the mast then it may be possible to shake the nesting material off. Go out on the windiest day of the year and lay 'er over. Might work; and if it doesn't then you've gotten in a good sail. Mike

not the best

solution but in a pinch last year I had some luck with flagging tape. You know? The colorful plastic tape surveyors use to mark stakes. I attached the lower 2' of a 5' pole (broom handle) to my main halyard. I tied 12" strips of flagging tape to the pole. I also attached strips to a light line and attached it to the main halyard shackle. The pole should stick up above the masthead and the streamers should work. I added more streamers after awhile; later I split the lower line into two (inverted V shape) to protect the spreaders. Shinny Christmas tree streamers / boas work too. good luck Kurt

Think you have a problem?

The folks who dry store their sail boats at Nockamixon state Park in PA have a turkey buzzard roosting problem. Not only the windex damage, but you know what those critters eat!

Plastic leaf rakes run up the main halyard, so

the plastic tines are above masthead are popular in a nearby harbor with a big problem like yours. They also attach some kind of lightweight longish (4-5 inches) spikes on the masthead. Also the marina company will send the boats owner a registered letter advising them they are violating a marina policy of unregistered liveaboards (the birds) and to cease & desist, at least mine probably would.
