Birds and Boats

Had a great sail yesterday afternoon and called it a day about 1800 as my crew had a social obligation. Was back on the boat at 1000 today to work on a couple of projects. In the intervening 16 hours a couple of swallows decided that the aft end of my boom was a dandy place to build a nest. Didn't check with the marina office; didn't offer to share slip fees; just moved in. And were they riled when I shooed them off! You'd think they had lived there all their lives. They spent a good part of the morning dive bombing me when I least expected it though I found waving my hat to be a good defense. While I'm not a card carrying member of the Audubon Club, I actually enjoy birds. We've got feeders at home, bird books and the like. But just when did birds get so uppity? The gulls in the marina think my coiled dock lines are a great place to rip crabs apart--they never clean up their mess, but leave it for me. The Great Blue Herons take offense if they have to move off the dock when someone walks down it. The ducks seem to think swim platforms were designed expressly as perches for them. Got a bird story? Better yet, got a bird solution??? Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

Oh those birds!

I'm not an amimal hater, but the birds are really starting to get on my nerves. Just when I have finally come to accept bird poop removal as a fact of life, so far this year I have removed three bird nests from my anchor locker and one from just inside the gen pole hole at the base of my mast. When did building nests in trees go out of style? Joe C. in NC '01 H260 Windward Passage (Finily wet this past week!)

The best part is...

...when they perch on the plastic owl which is supposed to scare them away!

Plug Your Boom

Many of my friends use a small block of foam cut to fit with holes for the reefing lines to plug the aft end of their boom, It keeps the birds out. John

Keeping the sail cover clean

I tie a piece of light line loosely from the mast to the topping lift so that it hangs about three inches above the sail cover. It works. Now the only "white thing" on my navy blue sail cover is the Hunter logo. All I gotta do now is figure out how to keep the birds off the masthead.... Peter H23 "Raven"

Snake

Try using a rubber snake. Seems to work well. Move it around often so the birds don't get wise to it.

The Ship's Cat

We liveaboard and our ship's cat enforces a bird no fly/walk/swim zone around our berth. Even the birds who land on the masthead take off when they spy the cat. Not practical for everyone but works for us. Rodney Kidd C-38 #297, Flying Bear

What's good for the goose

We have an enormous permanent goose population that just LOOOVES the boat ramp on Rob's parent's floating home. But you're right about that uppity thing. Sheesh! You can't even climb onto Rob's boat without them raising holy hell about it. You'd think I'd stepped on their tailfeathers or something. LaDonna
