Not much you can do . . .

as long as the owner keeps feeding them.
We have problems with gulls and pelicans. I have had luck with the fishing line trick, and also have had some luck with Coyote urine tablets (I don't want to know how they get this stuff). The urine tablets require re-application periodically.

How 'bout a good old fashioned bb gun? Sunny day, ice chest of beer, sitting on the deck of your boat taking pot shots,... sounds like a fun day to me!! And you might get a meal out of it. Set a fishing rod out as well, and you might get a two-fer.

The problem will persist as long as the ducks are well fed and unharmed. They are basically pets at this point. Visual and acoustic scare devices are not effective as the ducks will become accustomed to them unless the are used in conjunction with lethal (shotgun, predator) control. Since shooting is not an option and predators seldom attack your target species at the location where you want them to, a physical barrier such as the overhead fishing line (at least 30 lb test strength) or netting is the most effective deterrent.

Ultrasonic devices are not effective for repelling birds; they work only on some dogs. There may be chemicals available that will deter ducks from consuming the feed the owner presents to them. Contact the USDA, APHIS Wildlife Services in your State for assistance.
AAaaaarrrrgh!!!!..........That is just what we need more big Government! :cussing: There are more effective ways of handling idiots with a duck feeding habit with out any government moron involvement.....and it has proven quite effect in our marina. READ MY PREVIOUS POSTING!

I second the plastic Owl solution ... Mine has been working very well for a month now. It is large 20 inches tall and I perch it on my dingy when it is up on the transom.

I hope the effect doesn't wear off, I don't want to go back to the mess I had before!

I watch cormorants dry hump the plastic owls on my friends spreaders.

Coyote Urine Tablets

Oh yeah, they've been making coyote tablets up here in the mountains for years. Great big huge buildings, where they have virtual herds, or flocks, (something like that), of them standing in line like cows, and a machine similar to a milking machine attached to them. I used to free-lance collect from them for awhile, following them around with little pee cups. Nasty dispositioned little creatures come collection time. It helps to get them in a head-lock.
I used to take a couple of the tablets every morning. Hasn't affected my mental health whatsoever...

I saw a vender right outside the Capital building just the other day selling them, seems like the Republicans were having a go at them.

Bird poop

Does anyone have any solution for keeping birds off of docks and boats?

The problem that I, and a bunch of my slip mates, are facing is that our dock is getting covered in duck poop. I mean every square inch of wood was covered the other day. It is nasty!

To complicate matters, the owner of the marina likes the ducks and feeds them. He puts fresh water and food out for them. He does not go out to the docks and clean up after them.

Would plastic owls, plastic snakes, or anything like that help keep the birds off of the docks and boats? Actually, they are mainly using the docks and rarely the boats. Still, there has to be a legal way to keep them off.

Any suggestions would be appreciated (other than b-b guns or Alka Seltzer).
My problem is with seagulls. I tie metallic, shiny (sp) tape (the kind they use in orchards and vinyards to scare off birds) to rigging and spreaders, or anywhere I can. I also keep some cheap blue plastic tarps over the deck for extra proctection while boat is moored. Still get some crap but definitely not as much. Frequent trips to boat also help. The more you're on it the less they are.

Tie old CD's, 12 or so apart to a line and run itt up the mast, the reflection does a good job of scareing them away

Avian poop is not just a nuisance, it is a health hazard. As has been shared elsewhere, your long-time friend and marina owner is the problem. Not only is it a pain, unsightly and a pain to clean but it is going to make you or someone else sick given the right conditions.

I might go about this in a tactful but fun and friendly way, using your computer to create a whimsical citation for blackwater dumping of raw sewage on the docks. Take it to him over a beer, express your concerns, all of them. Don't involve dock mates lest it appears you are ganging up.

A direct approach seems toughest, but will be easiest in the long haul.

If that fails, a slingshot and dry ice pellets work pretty good......

I should add. If your efforts with your marina are unsuccessful, proper photo documentation of the hazard can be submitted to the local code or law enforcement agencies in hopes the threat of a citation might prompt your friend into remedial action.

you and your affected mates hold out for a month or two on the slip payment and negotiate with him. this will bring him around quick.

Why dry ice, Phil? Projectile disintegration?
Maybe..... :). It also inflates if lodged under flesh.... Not that I recommend breaking any laws.

Here is a submission. I have yet to title it. I'm not too keen on calling it untitled. It just doesn't do it justice.
Materials include; Pigeon guano and concrete. Photo taken with a BlackBerry Torch 8660, auto focus , auto flash.

I may be a bit bias but I think that a 5' by 7' piece would look great on the wall or car of someone that feeds these troublesome birds.
