Was a few miles offshore Chicago and this guy hopped onboard. He was a pretty small bird and didn't seem to be afraid as he moved about the boat very near to me and my passengers. So I know a robbin from a sparrow from an owl but what is this?

Pretty smart bird. Knows how to coil line, pump the bilge and operate the autopilot.

"American Redstart" ... in fall plumage. Its a type of 'warbler'.
Probably 'tired-out' from a long flight and settled on your boat for a 'rest'. These birds usually fly all night long and will land on 'anything convenient' just after dawn or early morning.

My guess is an American Redstart. Probably a male although his breast should be darker. maybe a youngster?

When I was a kid, maybe 4th grade, we were motoring Dad's new Bristol 24 down Long Island Sound when a couple of gold finches joined us. One landed right under my chin on the tie of my lifejacket. I thought it was pretty cool. My grandmother (who was scared of birds) came out of the cabin, shrieked, flailed her arms, and scared them off. If I recall she knocked my sunglasses off too.

I'm a novice birder and really enjoy our feathered friends. So many stories to tell about them, but on July 17, 2008, during our two month Ocean Falls, BC CA cruise, we catch the ebbing tide north to Shoal Bay, We’ve been by here several times, but this time we stop for the evening. Lots of history here from the old gold mine that operated in the late 1800s. We hike the steep logging skid road to the mine that is still open. Twice a song sparrow perches near three feet from our pub table and sings its heart out for us. Quite nice to have such a wonderful afternoon musical show in paradise.
The Pine Siskins are among my favorite. Bold, fearless and a hoot to watch as their extended family feeds from the many feeders we have scattered about.
