Hi everyone- I would like to know how you get rid of those stains that bird poop leaves on your topsides? Boatsoap and a brush doesn't seem to do the job. Warren S/V Jetmags

Warren: I have found that the West Marine Brand or Star Brite brand of "Deck Cleaner" does a good job on this problem. You hose down the boat and remove what can be removed with a high pressure hose. Then you apply the Deck Cleaner to the deck and scrub with a medium to stiff brush. Let the cleaner do it job (5-10 mins but don't let it dry out)and let the decks soak in the cleaner. Then scrub again with the brush and rinse. You may also have some spots that take some detail work but this gets most of it off. I have not had too much good luck with boat soap for this process either. On those stubborn spots you may try some of the Island Girl Pink. If you let it sit in the sun, it will take almost anything off.

omitting bird stains
The best way that I have found is to use soft scrub. I had my boat in the Delta (CALIFORNIA),for six months at Hidden Harbor, and fought the excessive bird droppings alot. One of the other berthers who had been there for 10 years told me about it. Its cheap, its at all stores and it works very well!!!!

What type of boat did you have when you where in Hidden Harbor? That is where we are and have been there for 18 years (in the east harbor).

The real solution
I am assuming that the problem is boats sitting on the spreaders (common in LI Sound). Coneys Marine in Huntington, NY sells Bird X spikes that attach to the spreaders and the top of the mast that keeps the boats free of birds even in the worst conditions.

Steve, I was in the "West" Hidden Harbor at the very end. When I came down the fairway I went straight into my berth. I had a Catalina 36 then and its name was "A Crew'd Interest"....I see your posts frequently on this site and know that you hail out of Rio Vista..I'm your neighbor in Fairfield and my new boat (380) is in Alameda....I was in Hidden Harbor in 1996.We liked it a lot. There was an opening in Brickyard that we took (1996 till 2000) before winding up in Alameda @ Marina Village (across from Jack London Sq...)From 1980 to 1996 I was in Vallejo, Richmond and Benicia--with an O'Day 27...........Regards Gary Jensen

What is that mess on deck?
This may be slightly off the thread, but does any other slipholders in the Downtown Shoreline Marina in Long Beach CA notice oily spots on the decks, dodgers, canvas, everything. It started about two months ago, I think. Spots the size of quarters to silver dollars, with an oily base that beads water and resists cleaning. I resorted to liquid laundry detergent used straight, and even that doesn't always get it all. I think it might be the dozens of helicopters that fly overhead emitting unburned fuel out the exhaust. Anyone find anything similar?
