I've been sailing on a fresh water lake for 5 years and have never used biocide. Is it necessary to use it? I am concerned about the shelf life of the biocide, since you use very little and the smallest container I have found was at West Marine which would still treat nearly 960 gallons.

biocide required

unless you can turn your fuel over quick enough that it won't get alge you will need biocide, most sail boats do not go thur a tank of fuel a season and need the fuel to be treated, the shelf life of the biocide would be less importat to me then not having any in the fuel as it is designed to have a long shelf life.

Please check this note

One thing to consider if you have not been using Biocide.....Be careful you do not overdose it. If you do have alot of algae in the tank and kill it all at once I've been told it will clog up your filters.
