My current Tasco Binocs where dropped and the alignment is off (one eye looks up, the other down). So I find myself shopping for new ones. I was looking thru my new WM catalog last nite and I see the WM Marine II by Steiner for $399 (pg 808) and on page 811 shows the actual Steiner Model Commander V for $899. These 2 binocs look identical in every way. Does anyone know if theres a difference for $500!! I know WM does ALOT of business, but I cant imagine a 60% savings.

IMHO: Steiner, 750, w/compass

Everyone to their own poor taste . . . <grin> but "in my humble opinion" I'll take Steiner, 750, w/compass. Just remember to remove the batteries if they are idle for a long period of time (months).

NIKON

I own a pair of Nikon Mountaineers with which I am very pleased. I've abused them for more than ten years, and they are still waterproof. The problem with Nikons overall is that they've gone to a price-point merchandising structure, which means that you can buy cheap Nikons that are not nitrogen-purged that look exactly like my expensive Nikons, and the cheap ones will fog as soon as you leave them on a sailboat for a week. Plus, the cheap ones have a plastic body while the expensive ones are brass, which means that the cheap ones will warp in short order. In other words, just because you bought the Nikon name doesn't necessarily mean you bought the Nikon quality. I guess the main point here is DON'T SKIMP ON BINOCULARS, especially if there's a chance you'll be sailing at night.
