Binding Winches

The Barient #8 winches for my jib furler sheets tend to bind and get jambed when pulling either sheet. The port winch moreso than the starboard but enough on each to be a pain. I have loosened the retaining bolt each time which frees the winches up but it only will tighten back down after a couple uses. I have cleaned each winch thoroughly but that hasn't solved the problem. I have seen some winches with a washer on the reatinaing bolts, but there never were any on mine that I can tell. How are your bearings?

Greg -You should have caged roller barings between the winch drum and the shaft in the center of the winch base. It sounds like ther are binding. I would start by checking that the bearings are still round and then that they are clean and well lubricated with an appropriate winch grease.Justin - O'day Owners' Web
