I know, from prevoius advice on this forum , what paint to use for painting my binacle: Rustoleum is wonderful, it works especially well on fiberglass wood grain doors: one such one was a kola gloss brown, which brings out the texture of the door
But on my binacle, before I apply that paint, should I use some kind of primer that will fill the little holes the binacle has?
What kind do you recommend?
Thanks

Primer's job is to provide adhesion, not to fill pits and holes. For that you need some sort of filler. Preferably a two part epoxy, either off the shelf or home mixed epoxy and filler. Because the metal appears to be aluminum, years back I would have recommended Zinc chromate primer which was bright yellow. I haven't seen that stuff in 30 years. You need something that will isolate an dneutralize the aluminum. Or just spray on some Rustoleum brown primer over your filler. It might just do the job..

Repainted my binacle (steering column) 3 years ago. On day 1 Sanded it down with an orbital sander (80 grit followed by 120), Wiped with paint thinner and Primed with rustolium spray primer Jself etching primerK for aluminum. Second day painted with rustolium spray matt white. (Should have used gloss,,,my mistake) Came out great! Hint: Cover all cockpit and comings with drop cloths. Spray gets everywhere.

Ps. For the little screw holes i found some some small white plastic screw hole covers used in kitchen cabinets. Just push them into the hole after the paint has dried. Can't even tell they are there!

Nelson,
Now you've got me! What small screw holes are you referring to?

There were 4 small screw holes from an old wheel autopilot which was removed and a few small holes the PO used to attach a cup holder to the side of the pedestal
