Hi all - I am planning to install a Bimini on my 30 foot aft cockpit Catalina 30. I bought the bimini already from a someone around my house that was selling it as its the perfect fit and was almost new. I am planning on mounting it aft of my dodger to completely cover the cockpit when open. Its about 6 feet long when open. I do need to have it cut for the backstay. The backstay will pass through the canvas bimini and I need to decide where and how I should have it cut. Should I just cut out a small hole for the the backstay to pass through (requiring the removal of the stay to install the bimini every season) - or should I have a zipper installed running off to one side? Thanks and appreciate any feedback around how anyone here might have their bimini installed. Rob

Funny You Should Ask

As a matter of fact, the canvas folks installed my new bimini last week and the dodger today. Both my old and new bimini had/has a zipper which I find to be the best way. My sailing buddy's old bimini had just the hole which gave him years of frustration. The new bimini he's having made will have the zipper. So for my vote I would suggest the zipper. THE WAY SAIL BOAT OWNERS .COM DID IT

I RECENTLY GOT A NEW BIMINI FOR MY C30 FROM THE PEOPLE HOSTING THIS SITE. IT EXTENDS BEYOND THE BACK STAY. IT HAS A ZIPPER FROM THE PORT EDGE OF THE BIMINI ALL THE WAY TO THE "HOLE" FOR THE BACK STAY. I HAVE BEEN PLEASANTLY SUPRISED HOW CONVIENT IT IS. IT IS A BREEZE TO INSTALL THE CANVAS. ALSO I CAN QUICKLY AND EASILY UNZIP IT TO REACH THE END OF THE BOOM OR THE TOP OF THE BIMINI. GOOD LUCK.

Bimini slot.

Mine has a slot cut with seam binding to strengthen and finish. My backstay has a push pin that disconnects easily. Retightens with small locking block. Frank
