I've a question. When one says Bimini, does it refer to the Sunbrella material that provides shade or the Tube Frame or both?

For us it’s the actual material, of course you have to have a structure for it, but my boat has a bimini, a dodger, and a filler. In our boat vernacular we are referring to the actual cloth material. But the truth is your bimini won’t work without a frame.

Well I think of it as the whole thing frame and fabric. Why do you ask? Did you buy a bimini and only get one?

Frame and the cloth covering cockpit, mostly for sun protection but also rain.
(I assume the name is based on the actual place)
Without the.frame it is just a piece of cloth.

Dodger is forward section for protecting against spray... Can be hard or soft/cloth materials .. The name implies it's purpose.

I asked for a quotation for Bimini from SBO. Got a reply that they don't offer arch mounted Bimini. So now I'm wondering if I've made a mistake in the enquiry as I need only the Bimini fabric and not with the frame. I should have been clearer and mention fabric. hmmm...

I've always thought of the bimini as the whole structure, frame and cover. I have spent some time in Alicetown, on the island of Bimini, and wondered also if the name of the structure comes from the island.

There must be some way to contact SBO. I see you have a Hunter, is that one with the spoiler? Maybe they are mistaken about layout of your boat.

Lucky that my current Bimini fabric is still intact, I'll bring it to canvas shop and use it as pattern for the new. Problem with doing that is once the shop realise it is Bimini for boat, the price shoots up by at less 100% :yikes:
That's the attitude of businesses here in Singapore

I had a bimini top on my CJ5 Jeep. Window frame to roll bar, no frame like on a boat. So I believe a Bimini means a top that offers protection from sun and rain.

However, I believe when you inquire to purchase a bimini for a boat it normally means the canvas and frame. Most are custom built so an on-line store will probably not sell just the canvas. There are too many variables as to bends, mounting places, number of bows, bends in the bows, etc.

Sure you can buy a cheap basic bimini on Amazon or such places that are based on a certain width, height and mounting option but they will not include cutouts for aft stays, arches, etc.

Plus sunbrella does stretch over time. Enough that all my readings says that a quality canvas maker will not use the old canvas as a pattern for a new bimini. He'll want to measure and create a template. When I started sewing canvas for my boat a long time friend and auto upholsterer by trade warned me to never use old upholstery as a pattern. He said to copy from it but always use a new template and measurements. Old upholstery and canvas stretches too much to get new nice and taught.

I will say, when I bought my last canvas purchase of a bimini, filler and dodger the frame was in place. They came and measured for the fabric, and sold me a bimini, filler and dodger. As I type, my dodger is in the shop and the frame is on the boat. Of course none of the canvas works without a frame!

Ward, Thanks for the heads up. Didn't realise Sunbrella stretches.

I wish my bimini Sunbrella would stretch a little. Seems like it shrank. I have a difficult time getting the leading over the bow and zipped closed

I usually have to water my dodger to help it stretch out before I can get all the snaps snapped on. Other parts of it are baggy. Go figure.

A bimini refers to a lightweight cover, usually made of fabric stretched on a metal frame which is readily removable, for the cockpit or deck of a speedboat or sailboat. It was reportedly created in the Tropic of Cancer on the island of Bimini because of the extremely intense sun, there was a strong need for bimini tops there and in other island locations throughout the world. Bimini tops are now commonly used in lakes, rivers, and seas everywhere.

Actually I should have said it can change shape by stretching or shrinking over a long period of time. Kind of like a sail. A new sail will be nice and crisp and hold a good shape. An old sail will be stretched and baggy.
