Bimini/Mainsheet interference

First sail in my new 2004, and immediately discovered a suprising problem: The bimini comes far enough forward to prevent hooking up the mainsheet to the intended eye on the boom. Suprising because I find it hard to believe that you would have to chose between having the bimini up and sailing. Is this by design, or do I have an oddball? If by design, what have you done to correct the interference? The only thing I can see is installing another eye about 2 feet forward on the boom, which will obviously decrease the mechanical advantage for the mainsheet. Thanks for help and suggestions. Mike

Dealer Problem

It would seem to me that the dealer should fix this problem, either by giving you a new attachment point on the boon or repositioning the bimini. Our 260 has a short bimini so this has never been a problem but the Catalina 250 we had previously would not allow us to have the bimini up and sail efficiently.

Move the boom bail...

I moved the boom bail up about 8" when I intalled the full sized bimini. Fair winds, Tom

Add another eye

Yes, you will need to add another eye. Remove the rivits from the existing eye and slide it forward. Then slide in the new eye and rivit in to the existing holes. Yes you will lose some of the mechanical advantage (But not that much) but I find you don't sail with the bimini up when you need everything you can get.

Slit In Bimini

I have a full sized bimini on my Hunter 26 and I can sail with it up. The fix requires you to put a slit in the bimini that the mainsheet can pass through and travel, a bit, in. The edges of the slit are reinforced and sewn with seams. Very little shade is lost through this method and you do not need to make any hardward adjustments on the boom.

Go back to the dealer

I had the same problem, since the bimini was supplied as part of the package the dealer moved the boom eye forward to clear the bimini. Only issue is on a close haul the sail will not come all the way in. When sailing with out the bimine up I attach the main sheet to the eye at the end of the boom that the reefing line ties to. it is the same size eye, attatched the same way. this allows for full trim. I did end up having to add a window to the bimini to be able to see my wind vane

Add second bail

We have the full bimini and couldn't do without it. Add a second bail about 8-10" forward. Then when you don't use the bimini move the mainsheet back. We hardly notice the difference.

Use the reefing bail

We use the bail that is normally for tieing off the reefing line as the boom attachment point of the mainsheet when the bimini is deployed.
