Bimini For O'Day 222

Alright, All the talk about biminis has finally gotten to me. Anyone have a photo of an O'Day 222 with a bimini? I know that if I want to sail with one up, it will either have to be pretty short or be aft of the boom (my mainsheet is up near the companionway). Anyway, just wondering if anyone has done this. Love to see photos of it if you have. But naturally any comments or advise welcome.- Chuck D

Chuck, Maybe you can make one like RWs, Rig it so it can fold back out of the way for when I get a "fish on". I've been using a golf umbrella tied to my stern pulpit, for shade. There just has to be a better way. Hee Hee!Joe

Sunshade for O'Day 222

I've made a sunshade for my 222. My boat is rigged with mid-boom sheeting with cam-blocks at the bridge deck. The sunshade is white sailcloth (approx. 5.5 oz.) that slips over telescoping (Forespar brand) tubes. One tube is behind and against the backstay; from both outboard ends of the forward tube (whiche is positioned close to the mainsheet) has lines running straignt forward to the shrouds. To help stablize the shade, from each of the four corners, there are small lines running down and tied to the lifelines at the stanchions. The 'footprint' of the shade is trapozoidal. The lines running forward to the shrouds sometimes interfere with the mainsheet when on a braod reach, or run, but it's no big deal. I'd attach a picture, but unfortunately I'm on the road and don't have a photo available.

I made from sunbrella and have 1/2 diameter fiberglass awning rods as supports.The section over the winches is not trimed.r.w.landau

Jon - like Joe, I'd love to see some pictures when you get the time.Steve - that looks great, but I thing the boom height of the 23 is a lot higher than on the 222. Plus you have the mainsheet at the back, on my boat my mainsheet would be going right through your bimini, but it looks fantastic. where did you find it for $300? It might work fairly well a little aft for me, and at that price you can "customize" it.R.W. - This is something like what I have been leaning toward. Basically a tent of some type, but I'd like to see if anyone has something on the 222 that they can use while sailing.This is something that I'm going to do this week or anything, but it does get hot in TN, and it's never to early to start thinking about the project I'm going to do after the 4 that I doing now.Chuck D

Boom Tent

I'm using a poly tarp for a boom tent right now and it's ok but very noisy when it's windy. Some day I'd like to make one out of Sunbrella too. I'm always amazed at how cool the inside of my cabin is on a very hot day with my boom tent up. I sometimes rig a shorter tarp from the front of my mast to my forestay to keep the sun out of my forward hatch.

The Sun Shade.. for the 222

Jon from Kokomo,I have seen your projects in the past all of which I highly recommend. This sunshade I definitely will be interested in duplicating. May I take the liberty to mention that if it were not for you I may have bought some other brand of sailboat. Your years of sailing experiences has surely guided me to a most wonderful trailer sailer. Everything you had told me about this model is true. Getaway was not easy to find, to bad they only made what 130 of these beauties? I wonder how many are left? I know you are in Florida now and don't have pixs with you. I moved my mainsheet to be a mid-boom mainsheet on a traveler. This does 2 things. 1) it get the mainsheet control in front of me while I'm at the tiller. 2) It allows for a pretty easy traveler set up. I sailed the boat for a while with the mainsheet on the backstay (like the boat comes from the factory) but decided to move it to add the traveler and to get the mainsheet in front of me. It is much easier to make small adjustment to the mainsheet now, although the sheet line now collects on the floor in the middle of the cockpit, instead of at the back. I also moved my jib sheet winches down from the cabin top to the coming. This lets me sit at the tiller and make all the adjustment that I might need. I single hand the boat a fair amount, while this setup is nice for that, it does make things a bit more crowded if there are 3 or 4 people on board. I think there are some pictures of the traveler posted to this forum just recently, if you are interested.As far as the bimini/sunshade is concerned, I'm not sure I will be able to make one that I can use while sailing either, which is why I wanted to see what others were doing. I've been leaning toward something like what you describe, but if I can get something that lets me sail with some shade up too, I'd be really excited. The link is to a product that is sold on this site, I'm thinking of building something like this, much like you, using tent poles and sunbrella or other similar materials.- Chuck D

Chuck R - I posted a picture of my traveler, but it seems to be missing from the archives (maybe they don't archive the pictures). Anyway, it doesn't get in the way when you are not sailing (it is over to one side, making entery and exit from the cabin un obstructed) but it can make it a little harder to get in and out while sailing. No more than your padeye set up. I put it about 3" forward of the centerboard pull, so there is still room to step to get in and out. I'll repost a picture later tonight.- Chuck D
