I am thinking about putting a bimini on my 1989 Hunter 30. I want to talk to someone who has experience with a bimini.
Thanks,
Steve

What's your question? Do you have the split backstay? Your cockpit isn't a whole lot different than mine if you have the split backstay.

Full enclosure

I have a full enclosure on my '80 H30.

Basically a dodger and bimini, with a connector between and some side walls zipped on.

We use our bimini a lot on our ski boat in the California delta during the summer and fall. It significantly reduces skin cancer issues and acts as an air conditioner. Everyone likes it. We have not planned to install one on my new sailboat in San Francisco bay yet. We will see how much sun exposure we experience this summer in the bay. Check with your local canvas shops and hunterowners.com for prices, construction details, etc.

Check out the bimini on our '86 Hunter 28.5 with provisions for the split backstay. Go to photo Galery in
www.huntertwentyeightfive.com in Celebration II. The bimini is the full width of the cock pit, mounted on the forward support of the stern pulpit so it is out of the way of the aft winches and extends from about 8" behind the boom to just over the stern pulpit. There is a 12"x12" sail trim window with a velcrow attached roll-up cover, and a Bimini 'boot'. I did have a new main cut with about an 8" taper off the foot so the boom would be 6'-1" clear of the cockpit floor and we can sail with the Bimini up.
This was custom measured for the boat by North Sails, Annapolis for $1244 in 2003 and is still ingreat shape.

Yes, I have the split backstay. I would like to see pictures that showcase the bimini and dodger. I want to have such pictures to go by. I believe that I will be purchasing a bimini (and perhaps a dodger) KIT from "RiggingOnly." They don't have pictures of their kits on a Hunter 30.

I am afraid that the bimini will be too low for comfort in and out of the cockpit.

I am not too interested in doing something perminant to the boat that will alter boom positon and otherwise affect sailing characteristics (lord knows they are not all that good to begin with).

I would like to see pictures. I plan to use a KIT mfg by a company named RiggingOnly.

Closest thing I have to pictures are a couple of videos in which, from time to time, the enclosure becomes visible:

Full standing headroom throughout - transition comes fairly tight to the boom.

I enjoyed both your video's in composition and music. I too would like to post on YouTube but have no idea of how to do it. I have a couple of digital cameras. Do you have a simple editing tool/program you use?
I did see your bimini and dodger. It appears that you have good room beneath your covers; but, is your boat a Hunter 30; I can't tell. If it is, was it necessary for you to raise the boom to accommodate them? My boat is presently without a standing mast so I can't adequately describe it to you; however, I have a friend that has one exactly like mine. I think he has to make some improper adjustment in the posistioning of the boom and thus the sail shape in order to have comfortable room under the bimini. I won't know more about what my options and constraints are until I get the mast up which will hopefully be in 3-4 weeks. Thanks again for the pictures. They look good. Your covers look great too. Congratulations

It is an H30 from 1980.

The dodger is lower than the the bimini at the wheel. The transition piece from dodger to bimini is at an angle that clears under the boom by 1/2 and inch. The boom end is angled up from bottom to top at the end, and the transition follows that angle.

No change to the sail plan was required. The topping lift hold the boom at that position when sails are down, and under sail the boom can lift but not drop (I have no vang or kicker).

Check out the help link at the bottom of the youtube pages - good introduction to posting videos. I uploaded those in 720p having rendered them out of a higher end program.

How is it with the topping lift off under sail upon tacking; I suspect then that you don't remove the topping lift under sail?
So, with the topping lift on, is there no effect on the sail shape? (Please don't take from my questions and comments that I know much about sail shape and or sailing for that matter. It seems that if the topping lift is connected while sailing then there might be some sail configuration issues). Of course, of greater concern for me should likely be comfort of crew and passengers under sail.

I keep the topping lift on. Sail up the boom tends to rise, and in a tack or gibe it would drop. The sail is it's own topping lift when hoisted.

The only downside is some chafe and twanging of the topping when the sail is raising the boom.

GRAHAM, When I viewed the videos you supplied to me via the links in one of the messages you sent to me, did YouTube debit your account when I viewed your videos?

No, but they didn't pay me either (joking). It's a great free service. It's the best I found for my videos (weighing ease of use in with quality) and I tried many.

Looks like I peaked at 3 views yesterday - woot!

Steve,

I installed a new bimini on a Hunter 30 1988 with the split backstay. I purchased through sailboatowners.com. Very reasonable price, excellent workmanship and quick delivery. I had the window installed which I wish it was a little bigger to view the sail and wind vane.

The only picture I have of the bimini is not a good one but shows the frame. I am 5' 10" and have plenty of headroom when standing in the cockpit.

1988 Hunter 30 Bimini

I have an 88 Hunter 30 with dodger and bimini.- and a window /sunbrella connector. I bought the boat in Baltimore three years ago and had the bimnini copied here in Saint John NB at Holder Canvass. I am happy with it but now that I have owned it for three years, I would have made the dodger a little bigger. I usually always fold the bimini back when I have the main up.

I added the window after a few weeks of sailing with the new bimini, it was a good idea on the part of the makers that way I made sure it was positioned correctly and was larger enough - it had a sunbrella cover as well

Cheers

Re: 1988 Hunter 30 Bimini

Thank you for commenting. I am dealing with other issues on my boat right now but I will be installing a dodger and bimini and I appreciate your information. When I get closer to instalation, I will likely make an attempt to contact you.
I do have a couple of questions now however. Is it dificult to fold the bimini back when you prepare saiiling? What happens if you keep the bimini up OR if you put the bimini back up after you actually start sailing? How would you have made the dodger bigger; do you mean you would have made it taller or extend it back further aft?
Again, thanks for your comments,
Steve

Hi Steve

The bimini is pretty simple to fold up. The pic you see has the cover over it but usually I just fold it back and wrap the straps around the poles ... only takes a minute ... if I want it to look neater or I know I will be sailing with main and jib then I fold it back before I leave the dock and cover it ... again it takes very little time. If I have a number of friends or family aboard I often sail just with my 150 then it depends on if I want the sun or not in the cockpit but no problem sailing with bimini up without the main. Another guy in the club has a 1989 Hunter 30 He talked about repositioning his boom on his mast so as to have the space to lower the topping lift and drop the boom when raising the main and keeping the bimini up and the boom off the bimini .. sounded like to much work for me!

The dodger height is fine ... I am 5 ft 9 in I would have had a slightly larger and sturdier frame with a little more canvas coming on the top and further aft.

Hope that helps out

Rick
