I am wanting to construct a cockpit shade. I have found after only two trips out in the Texas sun, this is a necessity, otherwise, you cook! In the piles and boxes of gear I acquired when I bought my H-22 was a canvas cover with wooden poles sewn into it and an opening with the same fasteners found on a sail cover. The width of this cover is approximatly the same as the cockpit width and it has bungee type tiedowns in several locations. I have included a picture. Does anyone know what this is....does it belong to an H-22.....if so, how does it install????

Tent

Looks like a tent to throw over the boom to minimize direct sunlight. Sort of a lean-to on the water.

Boom tent?

Maybe...but on the H-22, the boom doesn't cover the entire cockpit.....

Well, in Texas we have two Problems

with the sun. One is covering the cockpit and the other is covering the coach roof. A boom cover will generally cover the coach roof only and sometimes part of the cockpit.

Too much Sun

We too would cook in the sun here in Puerto Vallarta. We have a bimini for comfortable sailing in our h26, and a boom awning to keep the cabin in the shade while at the dock. We absolutely need both. David King "Molly"

Soo...what is this?????

And, how does it install? It is as wide as the cockpit, but much longer.....

Install...

Lay on top of the boom with wooden battens perpendicular to the boom. Open up the snaps and place around the topping lift with the short section extending past the end of the boom. Close snaps and tie lines to the life lines. That's my guess.

Used when anchored

Set it up as Monty describes when you are anchored. If you need shade when you are sailing you will need a bimini. On the Hunter 22 this is not easy because the main sheet is on a track in the cockpit. I had one from my previous boat that I made work by putting a grommet for the backstay. It works good for me because I can sail with it and the table is covered when anchored. It hangs over the back.

Example

Here's a link to west marine (model #2655710) for a picture of what the tent might look like pitched over the boom.
